05 - 06 Airbox MOD

Disclaimer:

There has been no evidence, (dyno), yet that this mod will provide any gain in performance. Testing has yet to be done.

This mod was based on the deckplate mod used on the 95-04 Tacos, which offered a good performance increase. (search "deckplate mod")

The airbox shown was purchased from eBay from some poor fool who spent his hard earned cash on a K&N kit.

That being said, I have tried a couple different configs and mods with the 05 airbox lid and have determined this one to be the one with the most "practical" potential.

The rubber plugs you see are the ones used in the bed of an 01 - 04 taco for the drain holes, (Toyota part # 90950-01570), and will run you about $17 for the pair from the dealer.

You could probably use three if you wanted to, but I felt that two was more than enough airspace.

The outer lip of the plug is 62mm across with a 6mm lip. This means all you have to do is drill a perfect 50mm hole for each plug.

The plugs are installed on the lid side so that you can still use any drop in filter available without sacrificing function. When installed properly, the plugs provide a firm water and weatherproof seal so that the airbox functions just like stock. (good for wet drives, dusty roads, and forging) Unlike the deckplate mod, these plugs are soft rubber, fit in your pocket, and wont rattle around in your console like the old deckplate mod that used a hard plastic cap.

Thats a pretty good idea....using the drain plugs. I have an 04 Tacoma in which I modified the air box via the deck plate mod and no matter where I put the plug in the truck it does rattle around:lol:

Anyways I also picked up a spare airbox on EBay for 20$!!! by some dumbass who bought the FIPK. I've been thinking about modifying that one also without a 4 inch plug maybe I'll try the drain plugs. Thanks.

55, Notice any better performance?
You know I can't answer that without getting flamed in here.:)

I have no dyno results to prove anything, and others claim that removing the entire intake system and running with no filters or plumbing at all gives no HP gain.

I will say that unscientifically, be it the cool sound, or what, the truck seems to have better midrange at WOT.....

I did it because I could, and because I was bored. The rubber grommets are way nicer than the deckplate though IMHO.......

Seat of the pants dyno says  ....

The other good thing about the plugs is that you can have as many, or as few in at a time as you want.

Remember... 50mm exactly....or else.:disappoin

guys, spell this out for me as I'm not following at all what you're doing here. Are you just putting holes in your airbox to suck in more air? clueless like I said.

wouldn't that cause less cooler air from the right fender area to enter, and more hot air from the engine bay? or does it have the opposite effect, and creat a vaccum or something to suck more air in from the fender area?

Thanks man.

No problem.

That's really not a writeup like I would have done (ie; no pics etc, but it seemed way too simple to need any.

Anyway, I pulled the plugs out before I left work, and did some "spirited" driving on the way home.. It seemed like a noticable improvement.

Combined with the removal of the second air filter I think it's a good mod..

Now if there was just a chassis dyno within 250 miles of my house.... Unfortunately, the guy in town just sold his.....

even if it only makes you warm and tingly...it still makes you warm and tingly :D

I did a similar mod. It only cost me a few dollars. I used a hose vent from a marine store. I drew around a spray-paint-can lid to make about a 3" circle and then used a Dremmel tool to cut it out. I then cleaned up the hole with a razor blade, and added a little bead of silicone around the perimeter, and then screwed it down with stainless steel screws.

I mounted it on the back side of the air box so it would be less noticeable

You can't seal it up, but I don't think I'll ever really need to. There are 2 drain holes in the airbox if any moisture gets in there. You should be able to see 'em in one of the pics.

I took it for a short test drive and noticed a real difference in acceleration and sound especially once you get over 3k rpms. It sounds a little "throatier".

Good mod!

I gotta :bump:this thread up.

I am really impressed with the results that I am seeing from opening up the air box with this mod. The engine feels much stronger and smoother now.

I REALLY recommend it.

There is more info about the air box mod in my CarDomain page.

Until there's a dyno run I will remain a little more conservative and not make any irrational claims.

However,

Today at lunch, my old (05) beast with 33's on it layed the smack down on a 06 TRD Sport with the temp tags still on it from 0-60.

.......Twice.

:D

Yeah, I really wish I had a buddy with a dyno so I could see the results of my modding, especially since I am about to replace the stock fan and install an electric radiator fan here in a couple days.

I can certainly feel and hear a difference.

On a forum somewhere I read that some guy did this mod on a 3.4 liter. He said that he had his dyno'd after this mod and it gained 7hp.

The airbox mod was PROVEN performance for the 3.4...

Not so with this 4.0..

"They" (i'll beat their ass if I ever find those fuckers "they"), say that air flow is controlled by the engine management system and no matter what, you cannot change the amount of air getting to the combustion chambers by making a modification to the air intake (unless you block it of course)

I have also heard that it's impossible to gain horsepower on this truck regardless of what you do to the intake.

(Including complete removal of all filters and assemblies)

No dyno, no proof.

Except the 06 Sport that got put in check today at lunch.
That was proof enough for me!

PB2Max, I went ahead and did the same mod you did on the air box. I followed the instructions you your cardomain website. But i was wondering if you had to take out the
20 , and 10 amp fuses I did both for 10 minutes. And you were right the tranny did shift a little strange. But I noticed that when I start the truck it kinda stays accelerated at higher rpms untill i put it on drive. Is this just part of the computer learnnig process due to the new air its taking in. I did notice a differnce in response and sound as well. I like it just concern it will be back to normal.

yeah, those are the right fuses. When I start mine the engine dies down to an idle pretty quick. Not sure why yours is different. Have you also done the 2nd filter removal mod? Check it in the DIY thread.

It can take your trucks' computer a full tank of gas to get everything tuned right. Just wait a little bit and it should adjust itself.
