'05 6 Speed Manual Tranny Noise

I have an 05 manual 6 speed and since day 1 I have noticed that when I shift depress the clutch and release the gas, it seems like something "races" a bit. It's not the engine because the tach does not tick up. It seems like an over aggressive transmission synchro or something. I took it to the dealer and the shop supervisor drove it and told me it was just the nature of the 6 speed tranny and clutch.

Is this true? I have seen this discussed one other place and the guy said his truck was having the tranny replaced. That seems ridiculous. Basically, it is just a different feel but I want to make sure I am not putting wear on the clutch or transmission.

In short: is this normal and if so, what is it??

Thanks

i drove a xrunner with the 6 speed manual transmission and noticed when you depress the clutch to shift, the engine doesn't rev up but maintains it's rpm - making it sound like something is "racing". i've had other manual transmission cars that did the same and it was due to a component called a deceleration valve. it prevents the engine rpm from dropping too fast between shifts. some decel valves can be adjusted while others cannot. you should check with the service dept or if you have or know someone with a repair manual, you'll be able to determine if it's adjustable or not.

i got a 6 speed manual TRD Offroad on order. when i get it (due here late april/early may) i'll let you know how mine performs.

Thank you for posting this. Now I know I'm not losing my mind. My truck does the exact same thing, and as someone who considers themselves quite confident at driving a manual tranny, I find it annoying.

I notice it most when shifting under strong acceleration. I have been trying to look at the tach but have not noticed it moving, but there is a distinct engine revving noise that the truck is making. It's been driving me nuts and making me doubt my abilities to shift as it just doesn't sound smooth.

Has anyone tried turning this mechanism off or down?

Thanks,

Justin

I also own the 6pd tacoma:
I too noticed this right away when a bought the truck in January. I've driven many manual transmissions and have never had this problem. My friend (a '98 Tacoma 5sp owner) also commented on this right away when I let him drive the truck around the neighborhood.

However, I think that either it's just a high friction point on the clutch and/or a very light gas petal. For awhile I would make myself lift my foot completely off the petal (instead of just lifting) when I shifted, which stopped the "racing engine". 7000 miles later, I now don't do this anymore and actually forgotten about the issue. I guess I just learned to drive it. However, the rare times I really want to get into it and accelerate hard, I still do feel like I'm not "smooth" yet. I'm sure that will come. So those new Tacoma owners out there, I'll bet you'll adjust to this clutch and will not have this issue in a few months.

i'm the guy who posted this and just to respond.. i too am glad im not losing my mind. i also heard that it helps with emissions. I guess it's fair to assume since all of our trucks do this, that it's not going to cause premature wear on anything. Ill call the dealer again and ask about this "deceleration valve". ill post if i find out anything useful.

Sorry guys but this is NOT a clutch issue..............don't believe me..........put you truck in neutral and hold the gas pedal on about 3000 rpm's then let off and watch the tach........their is a delay.........its bad throttle response not the clutch.

Its just the nature of a Tacoma, My 01 did the same thing just not as bad as my 05.

It could just be that they ran a really heavy flywheel on this engine.

When the factory shop manual becomes available, we'll be able to find out for sure. If there is in fact a "decel valve" that is holding the revs up between shifts, I'm definitely gonna remove it!

i also have that rpm flux

I also have a 05 6speed but i only notice it when the engine is warm. Next time you get in and drive see if it happens when its cold. It might have to do with the computer chip the way its programed. just a thought.:D

Its a new thing they are starting to do in cars...My buddies 05 Legacy GT does the same exact thing...I think its kinda annoying I wish they didnt put it on but oh well
