I have an 05 4wd Dbl Cab V6 Tacoma.

I was up under it today trying to study out where the grease zerks were.

I only found 5: Two on the front drive shaft and three on the rear, all in the joints. Are there some I'm not seeing? The 05 must have fewer than the older models - my dad says his has 11 (2000 and including balljoints).

Probably a really ignorant question but it wasn't until I got my Tacoma that I cared so much about doing self-maintenance. What are grease zerks? Are they grease injection points? If so, what type of grease and applicator would I need?
Yeah. Those are the plugs that you put the grease in. Just any grease gun from wal-mart or somewhere will do. I just wanna know if there's only five that I need to worry about, I didn't want to look over something and it go out in a few years. It seems that the Tacoma will be a really simple vehicle to maintain yourself, especially the oil changes and chassis lube.

Hey bluzman, I'm down in Somerset. We were just up in Louisville last weekend. We went down to 4th street live:whatwhat:

Adrenalinate, the Toyota maintenance guide that comes with your truck suggests you should grease every 5000 miles with oil change if you drive in desert or dusty offroad conditions. I'm not for sure for just regular street driving, probably not as often.

The Amsoil site says that the 4wd has 8 fittings, but the 2wd has 0 fittings.

They're up their you'll have to move your driveline around. The front one you can just rotate, but the back one you'll have to move your truck forward or back a little bit to expose them. I just checked that Amsoil site as mentioned above saw it has 8 fittings for grease on the driveline, :wtf:. I'd like to know where the other three are

It doesn't say where they are. It just states that there are 8. They could be wrong.

I just sent them a discrepancy report because they had 5.8 quarts down for the oil capacity of a V6 4x4 2005 Tacoma. 5.8 quarts is the capacity for the I4 4x4. The 2006 spec sheet for the V6 is correct with a 5.5 quart capacity for the 4x4.

I saw that too. On mine (05 4x4 V6 dbl cab) It will hold 5 quarts of oil with a new filter. After that it is over full. Like a dummy I put in the 5.5 qts listed in the owners manual without checking it and it was about a 1/2 quart over on the stick after I started it up and shut it back off, and I had to drain some. So it may be wrong on the grease fittings also.

Just greased my zerks today with the help of a buddy. Only found a total of 5: 3 for the rear prop shaft and 2 for the front prop shaft.

Total of 5 should be the same for all the 4x4 models, regardless of cab size. Pre-runners I imagine only have 3??

Tips: The 3 on the rear are on the outside of the u-joints. The 2 on the front are inside the u-joints. Easy to locate as you can rotate, just like kytaco says. The rear zerk on the front prop shaft requires the removal of the heat shield to get to the fitting though.

ANYBODY FIND THE OTHER 3 ZERKS?!?!

Did mine yesterday. Looked for 8 and only found the 5 you did.

TacoSport05, I was able to reach the front prop shaft's rear zerk without removing the heat shield, but I will say it is a biiiooootch to get to the fitting! I reached around sorta over the top and was able to get it much easier than trying to go straight up from the bottom which I found is almost impossible with my grease gun.

I'll have to give that a try next time. I'll make sure to look for a grease gun with an extra long hose. My buddy's grease gun had a shorter hose I guess...
