Hey guys.

Can someone with factory navigation in their 2007 Camry please take a few pics of their rear-view mirror and the surround area on the windshield? I plan on taking the photo to my dealer's parts dept. and order one of the factory GPS antenna mounts (the black plastic box mounted up by your rear-view) to see if I can use it on an aftermarket navi system...

Thanks

It has nothing to do with factory navigation.

Toyota shows the NAV antenna in the top of the dash.

It is called "inner rear view mirror holder cover" and hides the power wires to the EC/Compass mirror.

Check your Service Manual.

Well, that's interesting since I have the auto-dimming mirror with compass and I have no box up there, my power wires are hidden by a small plastic sleeve as in most vehicles. However, I do have an '05 Avalon with factory nav that does have the big black platsic box...

Regardless, I need a pic of it as I could use it to hold my GPS antenna no matter what it's actually used for since my rear-view magically doesn't use it.

I mean come on, don't be counter productive. If I had wanted to use it for its intended purpose as stated in manuals, then I would have spent my money on buying a factory nav unit; I'm clearly trying to mod something to work differently and benefit the Toyota community on informing them on what they can possibly do with their gen 6s also.

I have an auto-dimming mirror with compass as well on my Gen 5. It too has the box on the window behind the rearview mirror. Unfortunately, I can say (unless it is different for the Gen 6 Camry) that the black box is the location of your compass module. It should have nothing to do with navigation (unless you are referring strictly to direction). I know this because I installed my mirror by myself and distinctly remember attaching it to the back of the mirror where it comfortably clamps on. I have no navigation capabilities in my car (though I hope to some day).

Because these boxes come with a compass module in them and are a vital part of the mirror, I would imagine that buying one of these boxes just to take the circuit out (if it is really possible without tearing up the box) and install a GPS antenna would be just a tad bit pricey and an honest waste of money.

Take it for what it's worth. And I'm not being an asshole, I'm just telling it like it is.:D

after looking at the OEM nav I just got, the antenna acutally mounts in the dash. There is no external antenna that needs to mount anywhere. The antenna is a piece of metal with some wires attached with a foot of wire attached that plugs in to the back of the nav system. The antenna never shows. I think you are referring to the antenna's that aftermarket systems have that are external that usually mount in the windshield or something the OEM systems do not have that. Hope this helps! :)

I forgot to mention that if you buy an Eclipse Nav unit (probably the best aftermarket you can get) the antenae will be inside the unit just like the OEM systems. What system do you plan on getting?

Yeah, I figured it out. That box on my Avalon has an XM antenna in it. I may order that plastic box to fit an avalon and make it work on my camry so it looks factory with good reception.

The pranksta: I have an AVIC-D2 that I had in my Infiniti QX4 (recently sold to get the camry) that I will be using. It has an external antenna, similar to the size of an XM micro antenna by Terk.

Looks like a nice unit. I seen it before. Sounds like a good plan if the dealer does not charge you a grip for the little black box. So I am assuming that Scosche has come out with the 07 Camry stereo install kit?

GPS Antenna

I have a Pioneer AVIC-Z1. I mounted the GPS and XM antennas under the dash (up high) and get all satelites with strong signal on both. Dont bother with mounting it on the window.

If you get the XM/Nav Trafic receiver, it fits great in the center console all the way forward. There is a bunch of room in there.

you say you have a z1??

which vehicle is your z1 installed in , and how much did you pay. im thinking about getting one. i found a nice source for 1399 , ive herad horror stories about the navigation though, and i have also heard that the i pod interface is terrible. the nav is said to pick the wrong routes, or take you out of the way,, is this true? if so ill just get a factory nav for 1500
