We are interested in customers who have bought either a 2008 or 2009 Camry Hybrid. Gas mileage. Other. Anything really, since we are thinking of getting possibly one.

It will move out fairly well if you really put your foot in it, but under more "normal" throttle input it is relatively sedate to say the least. Of course, moderate acceleration is conducive to good mileage so that's the way to go anyway...
Part of it is perception IMO, since the CVT makes the acceleration process seem a bit unusual compared to a traditional auto trans. Not saying it's bad, just takes some getting used to.
All things considered,I am very pleased with my purchase and would do it again in a heartbeat! Just be sure to test drive one thoroughly and be honest with yourself about the "performance" vs. mileage trade-off.
Just my .02...:D

True but it's still low emissions. It's an AT-PZEV.

Actually, the TCH is about both low emissions and fuel economy...they kind of go hand in hand. Both are a good thing of course, but for me the mileage was the deciding factor (my Lexus is very clean burning too but only gets about 16-20 mpg).
Kinda and yeah, your example is a good one. Another is the LSh. It's decent FE (in absolute terms) but emissions is outstanding for a large, heavy vehicle.

Why not '07 TCH owners? We've had ours now for just a few days shy of a year. Shoot, we even got the hybrid tax benefit. Virtually no change between the '07 and '09 models save that the newer offerings are a bit stripped down from ours.

Overall we're very satisfied with ours. Economy was important but not the overriding factor. Low emissions was certainly important but not the single reason. I'd have to say the combination of reliability, economy, emissions, safety, comfort and value "drove" us to our decision.

Biggest disappointments are trunk space and dash rattles and squeaks. I understand there is a TSB which takes care of the dash rattles so that will be taken care of during our next scheduled maintenance.

We have had our 08 TCH for over 7000 miles now and love the car. We broke it in with bursts of full throttle to seat the rings good, just as I have done with every new vehicle we buy. It really moves out well. Harder break in like this will give you more power and fuel mileage down the road. With easy break in, the rings will not seat as well and the engine will be down a bit on power. Over the winter here in MN, the worst mileage we saw was 32 MPG. Now that spring is here, we're up to 40 MPG, just driving normal. Really like the ride, quietness and the fuel mileage of the vehicle. Also the convenience of the push button starting. I wanted my wife to have all the features my 2005 Audi A6 has.

Now for the bad. We bought the loaded TCH with Bluetooth, navigation and all the other trinkets. The Bluetooth, voice recognition and navigation SUCK! You can't input anything into the nav. when your moving, the bluetooth is very poor even after going in and changing the volume on the mic, people on the other end of the phone can not hear you decent. Have tried 4 phones with the Toyota system and it's poor at best. My wife has quit using it and gone back to putting the phone to her ear again. We bought a disc to override the navigation and use 7.1 on it. The latest version available, and I can not believe how bad the whole navigation system is. It won't finish sending you to a destination, the roads are not even named correctly and you'll be lucky to input your destination into the system. It is so frustrating to use. It pales in comparison to the MMI and navigation in the 05 Audi. I thought the Japanese electronics would excel over the electronics in the Audi. It doesn't, the Toyota system is not even close. These features were important to us, and we feel very letdown by them not functioning to there potential. At leas the push button start works. Just don't leave it, or any interior lights on, as it has no battery protection mode.

I disagree. That may have been a valid break-in process 20-30 years ago but not today. Metallurgy, CNC manufacturing and lubrication have all advanced making traditional break-in techniques obsolete. Just follow the manufacturer's recommended process.

Our TCH didn't come with navigation but we did get the standard (in '07) JBL 440 watt sound system with Bluetooth. At times the Bluetooth has worked OK, others it hasn't.

For Navigation I got a standalone Garmin Nuvi 660 which I really like. It was also quite a bit cheaper than the factory Nav.

I got my TCH on February 25th and have close to 3000 miles on it so far. I agree with most of the comments and, for the "low emissions" debate, I don't think the person who said they didn't care, didn't mean that they didn't care, rather it wasn't part of the purchasing process. I agree with this. When I bought mine, the salesman went on about how good it was for the environment and I thought "it's an advantage, but that's NOT why I'm considering buying it - I want the fuel economy for the size"!

I had an '04 V6 Accord with Nav that I traded and I agree with those who say the built-in Nav is not worth the extra. When I got the Accord, the only portable units available were $900-1200 and did not offer anything close to what you can now get for $200. The update DVD is almost $200, so it's cheaper to get a new portable than replace it - and I can update the portable instantly online!

Currently, I am working about 150 miles from home (over mountains) and staying in a hotel about 2-3 mile from the client. I get around 38.5 mpg going there, it drops due to the little runs through the week and averages out to around 36 overall for the week. A full week is using less than 2/3 of a tank of gas. The Accord would be empty after a week and I still have enough gas to get back there and ride around for the week before having to fill up.

Power is surprisingly good when needed, but, as others will testify, you still feel the need to drive around like an old lady, getting the best gas mileage you can! ;)

Alignment

I'm not sure if any one else is having this problem, but my car (3 weeks old) drifts slightly to the left. Only when the street is slanting slightly to the right does my car go straight. Is this normal? Should I take it in? Also I'm only getting about 32.5 MPG overall. I'm only on my 2nd tank though. Mileage gets better later on?

Thanks for any input.

rsway,
Check to make sure tire pressures are the same from side to side, a low tire will pull. I suppose its possible the car is setup to run on a crowned road in the right lane. Most roads have 2 percent crown to them, (for water runoff) and that is where most of our driving is done is with the road leaning to the right. It would make sense that it tracks straight when the road leans to the right.

Dirty Hybrid

We recently bought a new 08 Camry Hybrid. Our only complaint is that it is the dirtiest car we have ever owned. We have always paid for a carwash when we fill up with gas, and now we are never at our local service center any more, so our car never has a chance to get washed.
But seriously, great balance between performance and mileage! It is just what we wanted.

Had the 2008 TCH since early January. About 5600 miles. I'm pleased.

This is the first sedan I think we ever owned. Been station wagons, vans, and pickups. But at 64 yrs old, its time to get more sedate.

Had it on a couple of trips. mpg is sensitive to wind (which have a lot of here on the Gulf Coast) and probably also mountains (which we do not). But no wind, set the cruise control at 60 mph, and you'll get 40 mpg. Made driving fun again. I've always be touchy about fuel consumption, and this is care free compared to 22 mpg for the astrovans or 18 mpg for the pickup (no wind at 60 mph).

Yes, the first few weeks the TCH seemed to be pulling right all the time, but either it settled down or I got used to it. It is a lighter vehicle than I am used to, with lighter touch on the steering, and we do typically have 20 mph wind out of the southeast.

True, you can't poke in numbers on the nav screen or phone dialer when in motion. But if you can find your destination on the map, you can poke the map to the area, mark it, and set as destination while on the road. OK with me.. this is the first vehicle I have had with a nav screen, so have nothing to compare to.

I can dial out on the cell phone (while traveling) and then speak via the blue tooth. May have to lean toward the microphone a bit.

Yep, trunk space is small, particularly being used to traveling in an astrovan with the center seat out. And smaller yet with the big battery pack. But that goes with the territory. Good mileage (for me) was high on the list of priorities when we went looking for this car. And a bit of luxury (for the wife). And that's what we got.

I have had my 2008 TCH since January 15,2008. I have major problems. The dealer had the car for 5 months and car was dead on the lot. The car had been driven 175 miles. They charge it up and said everything was fine. Three weeks later, the "Check Hybrid System" indicator came on for 2 days then went away. After this happened 3 times, I took it back to the dealer. They kept it the whole week and the only thing they did was to reset the codes and re-tighten all the battery connections. After a month the car died while I was driving down the road. First the "Check VSC" indicator came on and the engine and motor would not engage. Then the "Check Hybrid System" came on again. I was able to pull to the side of the road, turn the car off and make it ready again. The engine and motor worked, but the "Check Hybrid System" stayed on. I took it to a different dealer. They found the inverter was bad. The part is on back order. It may be in by Tuesday. This is a $4,000 part. The second dealer seems to know what they are doing, but the first dealer did not have a clue how the hybrid system works.

I'm loving my TCH 08

I've been having my TCH 08 for 6 months with 8000 miles.

Mileage: at 55 F degree, 35mpg. 40mpg at 72F. I can't wait to summer here in Califonia where temp. at 85F-90F.

Ride: very smooth and extremly quite and decent accelebration ( like V5.5). After having it for 6 month, when I drove my wife's car one day (Accord 2003 70K, with NAV, leather...), I felt the car so saking and noisy like Acoord 1980 or even older.

Comfort: comfortably roomy compared to Accord 2003. I love the JBL sound. Bluetooth works fine for me except I cannot transfer all the phone numbers to the car at once. So I only transferred the numbers I call the most and stored them in the 3 pages of speed dial ( total 15 numners ). I don't travel and shoping a lot so the trunk space is fine for me. However, when I do travel, I found it decent.

Nav: I love the map but the voice command sucks. I love it when you are on freeway and the right side of the map will show you the info of next tree exits (name, time, distance, POI...). I used to enter info into the map while I was driving my wife's Accord, the TCH 08 does not allow me to do that no more. I welcome this safety feature otherwise you can play with many features using the touch screen and it is dangerous while driving. However, you can store six destinations in the six icons and you can choose those destinations while driving.

In short, I love my TCH 08 and I will never go back to the gas car because of the MPG and a very smooth and quite ride. In fact, I always wanted and waited for the electric car but it is not a prime time for them yet, that's why I bought the Camry.

It's like dial-up internet, DSL/cable, then Fiber => gas, hybrid, electric.

New '09 Camry Hybrid

My wife and I just purchased a new '09 Camry Hybrid (first hybrid, first toyota) about a week ago and we love it! First tank of gas I got 39.5 MPG. I was astounded. This is the first time I've ever bettered the fuel consumption stickers, let alone even met it (of course this could be combined with the new FE ratings).

Very tight construction. You feel like you have a car around you when you close the door (I've driven a lot of cars that feel like you're riding in a tin can). Extremely quiet and smooth ride.

The almost "interactive" quality that the gauges have are a cool feature. As you get better mileage the gauges begin to light up and grow in intensity until highest FE tier is met. If you maintain the highest tier for the current trip, the information screen in the dash will flash "EXCELLENT" at you...I like friendly cars. :D

We have the bluetooth option and have been very satisfied. There were a couple calls I've made where the other person seemed to have some difficulty hearing me. Overall though, very nice.

I have noticed that the wind can push it around sometimes if it gets gusty. It may be that I'm just used to a larger car as my previous was an '03 Crown Victoria (which was affectionately referred to as "The Land Barge").

The trunk is a bit small (especially when compared to the cavernous trunk in the Crown Vic). I haven't tried to make any trips yet, so I don't have much to say on it yet.

Overall, this is a great car and I would absolutely recommend it (as long as you don't need too much trunk space).

Just picked up my 09 TCH and got back from the 95 mile trip. 39.2 mpg! One aspect I was not expecting; in town I would get up to 30-35 mph, let off the accelerator and the car maintained the 30-35 with battery only, pretty much to the next light or stopsign. Conversely, I have yet to manage battery only as I accelerate from a stop, even with the lightest of feet.

I miss my 06 F-150 4x4, but not the 80 buck a week fillups.

Just spend 3 hrs at dealer yesterday for the 5000 mile oil change, thats the last time they"ll see me, only if its warranty work, wonder what all the guys with caddy's and town cars are thinking at $4.00 a gallen and no end in sight, Pattieman

Camry Hybrid 2008 Experience

I purchased my hybrid camry end of jan 2008. i live in chicago and for the first time i drove the most was to florda ,orlando which is 22 hours from chicago. i drove this car with 5 stops and i only filled up 2 1/2 tanks in this car and drove me 1150 miles.. this car was very very smooth. i was driving on a cruise control on 90 mph. best car i ever own even tho i purchased a camry le 2007 which was the worst performance with gas and engine pick up but since my 07 camry was total in accident i got this car preety much additional $8500 on top of the price of my LE that was paid by my insurence.
