12V Outlet Always on, Made Easy

After seeing what was posted here to make the cigarette lighter and 12V outlet always on, I thought it would be easier to just add another outlet, and it was.

It took one beer and about 20 minutes to do the job, but it would take less time knowing where to put everything now.

I purchased the heavy duty data port at Wal-Mart ($4.97) along with the external fuse holder ($1.97) The 14 GA red and black wire I already had along with 2 ring wire terminal ends.

I installed the 12V outlet inside of the aux. tray on the right side of the steering column. There is plenty of room for your hand to plug in your GPS or cell phone charger. The tray removes easily from the back side. There are 4 colored clips on the back side of the aux tray. They are easily squeezed together with a pair of needle nose pliers. While squeezing in on each clip, gently pull the tray outwards and the entire try will pull out after the 4 clips are released.

I used a step drill bit to drill the hole, I would guess the hole to be about 1 inch, but measure first before drilling.

I used a small sharp end punch to push a small hole through the wiring loom boot on the left side of the steering column and pulled the hot and ground wires through. The boot is soft enough rubber that it seemed to seal tight around the new wires.

The inline fuse was attached to the inside fender with a piece of 3M double sided tape.

Using two ring terminal ends, I attached the wires directly to the battery cable bolts and the job was complete.

I found this a lot easier than taking half of the dash apart to make the factory 12V outlets continuously hot. The dealer wanted $185.00 to make the outlet always on. I no longer have to re-boot my GPS every time I stop, or have the key on to re-charge my cell phone.

I don't get it. This looks so much harder than the other way of doing it (modifying the relay). I think I might have spent 10 minutes start to finish. 4 bolts (2 for lower dash, 2 for fuse box), pull the relay, jam something plastic in it to close the circuit, and reinstall. Whatever floats your boat I guess.

I had a thought, if you don't want to mess with modding the relay.

Why not just rewire the outlets themselves. Cut the factory wires, cap them and rewire the factory outlets hot all the time. maintain the factory look too.

WOW! Shows you how much I don't know. I looked at the original 12V relay mod and thought that removing seven panels, hood release cable then having the mess with the relay that it would be faster to just install another 12V socket. Guess I was wrong from what you all are saying.
