1988 Camry -- security

Hello everyone,

I'm speaking on behalf of my cousin whose car was broken into a few days ago. It's a 1988 Camry bone stock, except for the CD player.

Was wondering about the security of her car. She has a club so that's a good place to start. What about the locks, are they easy to pick on and pry open? The thief stole everything in her glove compartment and she had to get a copy of her insurance and DMV registration for the car. Luckily she removed all her CD's in there, and the CD player face.

What would you advise? Change her car? Doesn't want to spend for car alarm and that car has only cost her more money. Accident cost $1000, new radiator cost $300 (everything--parts n labor), etc...

She's planning on selling it if anybody's interested and might opt for a much newer (but used) car.

If it helps the apartment complex she lives in has no gate. On the same day I think, another entire car was stolen. And it's not the first time this happened to her car. Last time her CD player was stolen and the center stack was broken into as well. And her locks were picked with a screwdriver.

Thank you.

I don't think your cousin's luck is going to change if she goes with a different car.

A newer used car will likely attract more attention than the car she has now, which could likely put herself into a position to apply a security solution regardless.

It appears to me that her area of residence has a security issue if other cars have been affected. As a result, she will have to consider security options regardless of her choice of car. She will have to decide when she wants to make the security investment; whether it being her present car or another car down the road.

Sorry, I'm not trying to seem negative. But it's my opinion that security options seem inevitable based on the situation as presented.

I wish your cousin success in her decision.

Trixx,

What's a nine?

Adobe and Toyrolla,

I am not sure if she'll give in to these (solex and finding other solutions) because of financial constraints. I'm talking to her right now and she indeed is undecided.

What other suggestions you might have? Can you tell more about the security of her Camry? Or is it the basic stock factory lock? I don't think she changed it but what I meant was can you tell how easy it is to get into the car? Thanks. Sorry for the confusion.

A nine is a gun that is used commonly in the ghetto.

The best security investment in my opinion is a kill switch. For $50, my dad got a killswitch installed in the Corolla, where the engine won't start unless the lights are on, but doesn't affect any other electrical components. The light thing might be too guessible for some hijackers, but i've seen weirder killswitches, like the emergancy brake has to be on, or a switch under the dash.

I think the secret here is to make the car unapealing to the baddies. Things like ovious security systems just say "there is something worth stealing in here." If you need to keep anything of value in the car keep it in your trunk with it locked (turn the key oppisite of the open position to deactivate remote cable relese)

You might also get some fake doggie poo & put it on your passenger side seat instead.

One time, I was driving my 94 Accord to a coffee shop behind my friend, and she had a 91 Integra. She had a bangin system in there, as I had nothing. I pulled into the parking lot after her with her bass pounding. We parked, went inside, came out ten minutes later and my drivers side window is smashed, HU taken out, and my trunk wide open. Nothing to her car. And this was in downtown Salt Lake City.

Trixx,

Did your car had an alarm system? The thief might have thought that if you don't have an alarm system they could just get in without alarming anybody. I don't know, people have different reasons to steal stuff I guess.

Well my cousin has learned her lesson: Lock the glove compartment tight, don't leave anything valuable or not inside the car easily visible to outsiders, use a club/form of active security, and take the HU or at least the face out of the car with you when you park for the night.

Look in the Sunday papers, theres always some Car Stereo store doing some $99 - $199 - $299 special. That was my first add on to the car so I could get remote locking which made my car feel instantly worth a $1000 more. For a total of $230, I get flashing lights, engine disable, remote locking and an insurance discount. Also another blue flashing LED.
I didn't bother with the club because it will end up with all the other passengers in my trunk.

No, no alarm. But before that I never associated Utah with crime, that was nuts. It should have been my next move. I went to boot camp about 3 months later and the same exact thing happened when my car was parked at my mom's house. Getting an alarm was the first thing I did with the Cam.

I see. She also mentioned that she might get a car with an alarm and probably sell her Camry. This could also be a good bargain as her car has cost her some problems as well so I suppose upgrading her car to a better one would be, in the end, a better solution.

Is that why they call Anaheim as "Anacrime"??

Thanks for all your replies.

Sorry to bump an old topic. Seems like the petty thief just keeps getting back just "for fun". My cousin said he stole her small shirt from inside the car and closed the car with the doors locked so she wouldn't think it was broken into. Now she's asking where to find Solex keys? Any links would be appreciated. I'm in Anaheim, CA. Any retail stores (Autozone? Pepboys? Kragen?) that supply them? Thanks!
