2000 Avalon with only cold air on passenger side

My 2000 Avalon blows only cold air out of the passenger-side ducts, while the drive side blows nice and hot. The passenger-side center high duct is just slightly cooler than the driver-side one next to it, but the ones on the far side of the dash and by the feet are just cold. Seems like it's letting in the outside air. Moving the passenger heater control has no effect. I checked to make sure the cable from the heater/AC control is connected and it properly moves the lever which attaches to the end of the cable under the dash on the passenger side. Any ideas? Is there some type of electrically controlled actuator that mixes incoming air and air from the heater core/ AC that could be bad? I can't see anything under the dash, so don't even know where something like this might be located I stopped at O'Reilly and NAPA and they were clueless and showed no parts such as this.

I have the exact same problem as you describe. It happened about 3 months ago, and I have checked all sorts of things but have not found any solution yet. I actually decided to post now and saw your thread. I will follow along with you and offer any solutions I find. My Avalon is also a 2000 model. It has electronic dual climate control. Your Avalon has mechanical temperature controls? If so then I am a little relieved that my problem is probably not with the electronic control unit that my Toyota dealer suggested was the problem @ $1200.00 for the part!

O.K., that probably rules out my Toyota dealer suggested $1200.00 main control unit. Does your Avalon have dual temperature control (driver and passenger side temperatures controlled separately), or the conventional one temperature system? I'm thinking dual temp. from your original post, but just making sure.

i havent work this issue on a toyota but i just did it on a KIA. thre are cablese, gears move around to open/colse/redirect ducts. over time dust collects and those cables and gears get stuck. so what i did was cleaned it with WD-40 and lubed with lithiam greese. worked perfectly.

The cable connected to each temperature control knob runs to a lever mechanism, which moves smoothly as the knob is rotated. This casues an internal duct to open and close. At least that is what I assume as when I move the knob I can hear what appears to be the internal duct opening and closing.

Yea, I checked out mine a while ago and found that my drivers side and passenger side controls appear to be working the same on both sides. All actuators appear to be responding to the auto climate control temperature settings when I adjusted it up and down. It can't be a serious problem, probably just a stuck or disconnected air diverter somewhere. I am going to buy a service manual for it and look at the exploded view of the air duct system to see what and where everything is happening, or supposed to be happening.

The cable to the control unit on the driver side might be loose. Flip out the carpet on the driver side console and see if the cable is still attached to a white hook like on the passenger side. The cable is attached to a black clamp first and then it is hooked to a white lever kinda hook.

2001 Avalon XLS blows hot on driver's side, cold on passenger

Just came across this thread, and hoping someone has come up with a solution. My wife's 2001 XLS blows cold on the passenger footwell and defroster vent no matter what I do. I know what the response will be from the dealer here, and it will be expensive. As the car only books for about 4000.00, I don't want to sink 1/4 to 1/3 of that in it. She bought the car new, and besides normal maint., this is the first issue she's had. 140k on the car. Thanks for any suggestions.

Resolution to cold air on passenger side

Talked to a neighborhood kid who recently became a mechanic and works at shop that specializes in Japanese cars. I told him about my problem with getting only cold air on the passenger side and all the controls appear to work just fine. He told me they'd seen a Honda with that problem and finally determined the issue was a heater core that was partially blocked. He said that didn't make much sense to their senior techs, but that was the problem. I was going to take out my heated core to flush it out, but it's such a pain that I disconnected the hoses on the inside of the firewall and first blew out the heater core with air, then flushed water through it. Didn't really expect that would make any difference, but I decided it was worth trying because driving the car in MN winters is cold and if you can't get warm air to clear the R half of the windshield it's dangerous. Frankly, couldn't believe it when I got hot air once I'd completed this, but it really did solve the problem. Did this over a year ago (sorry I didn't update this then) and it worked fine all last winter and this fall too.

Heat Servo Motor

Sorry for revitalizing this dead forum. I flushed the heater core in my 2001 Toyota Avalon and even after that the temperature on the passenger side didn't change. So the last resort was to to find the motor in charge of controlling the heater door on the passenger side. I had to take the Glove Box (Glove box removal video
) and the bottom floor vent out to access the servo motor . I didnt replace it, all I did was remove the motor and move the control arm in an upward position, and duct taped it in that position (permanent hot air till I move the lever down or replace the servo door actuator). But I recommend replacing the heater servo Blend Door Actuator (87106), bec if you want to switch to cold air, it wont switch unless you go back the and push the white lever down.

Picture after removing the servo motor and attaching the floor vent back.

There were alot of Lexus RX300 youtube videos, which gave me an idea of what I had to do.

If your passenger side servo door actuator is malfunctioning Toyota Part Number 87106-07081 according to http://parts.bernarditoyota.com/par...yota/Avalon/XLS?siteid=216017&vehicleid=68892&diagram=8515130&diagramCallOut=10

Cheapest replacement I found was for $113 on ebay http://www.ebay.com/dsc/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=1&_nkw="8710607081"&_sop=15 , the left and right servo door actuator are different part numbers.

After removing the servo motor I disconnected the servo motor on the drivers side (you dont have to remove anything, just have to pull down the carpet on drivers side a little bit) and then connected the passenger servo motor to the driver side servo motor connector. After connecting it i toggled the driver side temperature between hot and cold to check for movement. So my servo motor did in fact start working, and it was a problem with the servo motor connector or the fuse box. After checking the relay, fuse box and connector and later attaching the servo motor back to its original spot on the passenger side, the motor started working again. I'm not sure what I did to alleviate the problem, my guess is that I pressed one of the loose connectors back into place while I was checking it. So Before buying a New Servo motor, please check if the existing one works by testing it on the drivers side.
