2000 camry 2.2L front cat replacement

My wife noticed her 2000 camry was low on power. I took it for a spin around the block and when I popped the hood after I noticed the front cat was glowing (see picture). I don't have to worry about inspections and the rear cat is working. I was wondering can I replace the cat version I have now (2505103030) with the federal non cat version Doorman 674682 it would save me about $300. Can I just drive a rod through it from below taking off the Down pipe?

Too much fuel entering the cat? Wrong timing? One member had that problem and many of us help gone through a long list of checks. Don't think we ever found the problem. So whatever do you with the exhaust, the culprit should be identified.

Hopefully not the timing that is computer controlled. The fuel trims looked ok on my scanner. I am going to check a bunch of other things but the car has been maintained I am guessing it is because it burns oil. That is what killed the catalyst on my Accord. I popped off the down pipe and looked into the cat it was looking really rough I hit it a couple times with a screw driver and the center fell out and the rest was damn near hollow. Put it back together for now running a ton better.

I am going to fix it proper but what I really want to know is can I use the federal non cat manifold?

Not sure if they will ship to you...I guess it's weird that they won't ship federal stuff to CA, but will to NY which is usually CA-spec?

In any case, I heard that the federal and CA parts are usually the same, just that CA law requires it to have a minimum 5-year warranty and the CARB sticker/embossing.

I guess if your smog guy doesn't check for the CARB markings you'd be fine. I guess you've got either a bad ignition-fault misfire or a clogged cat. Pull and disconnect the O2 sensor and drive it around, see if it still gets red-hot and/or you have more power - if not, then clogged cat.

I just finished the job I used I federal spec manifold off a 99 2.2L I think. A week of soaking the manifold nuts in PB blaster payed off and everything came apart without issue. I had a couple studs come out but I clamped them in a vice, removed the nut with an electric impact, cleaned the threads with a die and threaded them back in just like factory. The only part that was not bolt on is the top heatshield. I need to get a federal one off ebay. The O2 sensor wire was also more than long enough to reach the lower hole.
