2001 Solara Overdrive quit working,, Check engine light came on

The "check" engine light came on the other day. Shortly after I noticed I had no overdrive and seemed like it was possibly starting out in a higher gear from stop signs.
Is this possibly an electrical problem? I did notice when looking under the hood, the battery posts were very corroded. I'm cleaning these as soon as possible to see if this possibly helps.
Need some thoughts and ideas on what to look for or possibly check.
Thanks,
Jeff in Hagerstown

Yeah, knowing the error code(s) would be very helpful. Most auto parts stores will read them for free. Call some shops near you to verify before you go.

Suspecting a transmission solenoid went out. The O/D light might be blinking if anything too...I know older Toyota did that.

This is true.

In my Gen1 Camry, when the transmission was in 'limp' mode (a.k.a ECT fuse blew),

L=1
2=3
4=OD/4th

No torque converter lock up either it seeems.

It might be one of the valve body solenoid I believe. It would require the transmission pan to be drop and the solenoid valve plug into the valve body. Should be removal able once the transmission pan is dropped I think. Never did one in my transmission though.

Your transmission should be the A541E

Believe there a good pic here. From a sienne but trans should be similar.

On the lower left corner of that sticker

1C4 = Paint code
FA10 = Interior color/material code
04A = I don't know
A140E = Transmission code

So with the info I currently have,

P0755 Code
A140E transmission

To recap my situation,
Will not shift into overdrive.
Starts out in a higher gear.
Even manually pulling the shifter into low, it still starts out in a higher gear.
Fluid level is full and smells ok.
Car is running fine other than the transmission.
I cleaned the battery terminals and left them unhooked over night. The "check engine" light went out, but came back on after 30 minutes.

Should I replace the shift solenoid, if so, which one?
From what I can tell there appears to be 2?
While I have the pan off I will also change the filter and add NEW fluid.

Should I look for anything else that may be causing this?
I have not been under the car yet. Are there any wires going to the transmission that "possibly" could have come apart?
A possible blown fuse?

Thanks again for all the help...
Jeff

Just checked ALLDATA for that code, says primary culprit is Shift Solenoid #2, shown in the picture here:

...test that, possibly replace it. If that doesn't fix it, it says it's either a clogged valve body or a busted transaxle.

That is a nice picture.

Yea, I would do that in your shoes. If it's not the solenoid, then it's wiring going to it or computer issue/tranny.

Also disregard the info about the transmission, I thought you had the V6 4spd auto...

Yeah, one of the two shift solenoids will put you in limp mode. TCC shouldn't. In the mean time, start manually in L and then shift to D at higher speeds, vise versa slowing down. (Now you have a manual transmission!) :wink:

Looks like about $70 a pop on rockauto. While you're in there replace the strainer and wipe the magnets/pan as well. Call your local Transtar transmission supply house for competitive pricing:

Fill back up with Walmart Supertech Mercon-V, or try it out first with the cheap dino $12/gallon Supertech ATF. Use a 1/4"-drive torque wrench from Harbor Freight, usually on sale/coupon for about $10.

When my Cressida was shifting like a pig and threw those codes, it would randomly act up although most times it never worked and randomly it would 'work' for like a block and back to the same thing. Thankfully I have the 'super monitor' built into the clock in mines so pulling codes was easy. Bought a set of solenoid on ebay from a reputable seller. So far been great for the last 7yr since the car been in storage.

The plus side with me having to keep draining and refilling the ATF every time since I tried first a typical drain + refill, then strainer, then solenoid was that the trans fluid was super clean by the end lol...

I finally got around to working on the Solara.
I went ahead and replaced both solenoids and the filter.
Pleased to say, everything seems to be working AOK....
I'll head out for the interstate tomorrow and give it a good romp. Then come back through town and see how it acts.
I just want to thank ALL on here for the advice and help.
I did take it to a local mechanic for his opinion. He told me it wasn't the solenoid the code said it was, he was telling me it was a solenoid up inside and the valve body needed removed to get to it. He advised I put a NEW transmission in to the tune of $3700.00
After his fee for plugging it in to his code reader and the price of the parts I purchased I'm still under $200.00.
Again,
Thank you ALL....
