2002 Camry XLE V6 P0401 VSV?

Hello all,

I have been troubleshooting this for a bit, and I also did a search for VSV and the P0401 code and only got a 2001 2.2L response that was close.

So apologies in advance if there is someone better with the search engine.

I have a 2002 Camry XLE V6 3.0L Automatic. it has 250127mi on it. Recently I experienced a bad idle, and surging, and stalling, and generally rough engine running. CEL threw me a bunch of codes, but the predominant one I had come up was P0401.

I replaced the EGR Valve entirely. Took 2 codes away, but still bad running with the same symptoms as before, and CEL still on with P0401.

I replaced the Throttle Body with a reconditioned one and cleaned around the housing. That solved one more code, but I still have CEL with P0401 coming up and bad running.

Read on a forum to try and disconnect the vacuum line that goes to the EGR valve. as soon as I did...BAM! Car runs awesome!

So now I have it capped off and im driving it, I have a CEL light (Code p0401) on as well as TRAC OFF and VSC Lights come on as soon as I step on the gas. Car runs great.

My question is, is this a VSV issue? and if so, which VSV do I start with? The one that leaves to the EGR valve that I have capped off? If that is the one, what is the correct name for it, because the ones that say 'VSV EGR" on parts pages do not look like the one that leads to the EGR valve, rather one on the opposite end of the rack (See Picture). if someone could help me with identifying what VSV is what, and which one to begin trying to replace, I would be most appreciate.

Thanks!
Paul:smile:

Thanks for the insight, but if you read my post, I KNOW that the VSV for the EGR probably controls the EGR. Thanks.

BUT what I want to know is the VSV that DIRECTLY connects to the EGR is not the VSV in the pictures on Rockauto, carparts, autozone, etc... the EGR VSV is opposite left of the one that is hooked up to the EGR.

Can you snap some pics of the VSV that you have capped off and its hose? I can't see it in the pic.

Pics for VSV

Here is a Pic of it close up. The mesh hose that points straight up in the pic that is at the 12 o'clock position is the hose I have capped off.

But the one that the parts stores want to sell me that is the "VSV for EGR" looks like the other pic with the black looking "Barrel" on the end of it.

Thanks for any help!:nerd:

The one you have capped off is the EGR VSV. Part number 90910-12174. Personally I have had AMAZING experience with Standard Motor Products Intermotor. With the exception of one time, all SMP Intermotor parts I gave purchased have been the actual OEM part, complete with Toyota/Denso engraving. The other time, it may have been OEM but was not engraved.

Still an issue...Replaced VSV

Hi all,

Update on my Camry. I STILL have the issue described above. I bought a new EGR VSV control valve and replaced the existing one, and it did NOT solve the issue.

Also, i had an exhaust leak in the Flex Pipe that i recently replaced and that did not do anything either to help. Still, car runs great as long as i keep the EGR valve hose from the VSV to the EGR unplugged and capped off.

I got until may of 2017 when i will need to register it and i believe i am due to go to the Emissions testing which here in Wisconsin is every other year.

any clue on what could cause this issue? Please see my previous posts about all i have done so far. I about to take it to the dealer and just *see* what the hell is wrong with this. It runs great, and still gets great gas mileage, and is my work car so i want to keep it going as long as i can.

Thank you in advance for any insight into this issue.

Felix

Did you ever fix your issue Felix1972? We are having a very similar issue on our 2002 camry v6 LE but no CEL yet. It started happening this summer and we haven't fixed it yet. It only has issue when the car is warmed up. It'll have a surging at pass 40mph and then have a bad idle and stalling after that. After it stalls it won't start back up until about 10-15 minutes later. It would run smooth and fine until the next week or 2 or more. I have cleaned the PVC, throttle body, EGR Valve, EGR position sensor, and CAM position sensor. I recently found out that if I unplug the vacuum line that goes to the EGR valve it would startup right away. I plug it back in and it would normal again. When I unplug this vacuum line there was vacuum. I think the EGV value is stuck open and/o EGR VSV is stuck open. I just replaced the EGR VSV 90910-12174 with a used part that I got from a savage yard. Hope this fixes it. Felix1972, maybe your issue is the EGR Position sensor on top that looks like a triangle.

Ok, I replaced the EGR VSV 90910-12174 from a savage yard last week. It fixed one of the issue with the vacuum on the vacuum line during rough warm idle/surging. Now when I have the rough idle/surge there's no vacuum when I remove the vacuum line but I still have the rough idle/surge. Still no CEL. Also the exhaust stinks and when I shut off the engine doesn't start until I step on the gas pedal when I start it. It runs fine and idles fine after it happens again. Do I need to change the EGR Valve or something else?
