^ not much of a lead 'dere !?

"wicked knock" :dunno:

does it knock when ya turn it over, but engine does not fire
or does it occur when the engine fires ?

is it a single knock, once only ?
how loud ?
Mechanical knock or fuel vapor intake back fire ?

an audio/video would be helpful.

Is the vehicle in park... e brake applied prior to start up ?
parked on flat surface ? Incline ?

are you generous in your maintenance ?
or do you "just drive it 'til it breaks" ? Lol

mileage ?

I'd probably have a mechanic look at that pronto
as it could be something easily corrected...
but could also possibly cause further damage if not corrected promptly.

it starts as soon as the engine fires. last about 2 seconds. only happens after its sat for 5 hrs or better. doesnt matter if its on flat, inclined or declined surface. oil has been changed every 5000. has 92,000. sounds more like a fuel knock. not a ping. i'll try to get a video this weekend or after work one day this week. almost sounds like it's coming from the passenger side. i'm wondering if its maybe slop in the belt.

It sounds like the classic VVTi rattle. If it's any consolation... my 2013 Corolla LE has had it since about 2k miles and I've owned it since it has 2.5 miles brand spanking new.

They have a "new part" they'll put in there for you but in my extensive reading and conversations with mechanics... it works about 30% of the time. Most of the handful of Toyota mechanics I've talked to don't believe that it should work as a fix at all. That it is just a characteristic of the design... not a good one... but a characteristic trait nonetheless. Honda is dealing with this also lately.

A recording would help us also make sure it's not a real rod knock. but the cool down time and then the noise and the short duration are dead on for the VVTi rattle as it has become termed.

i had a friend start it up while i listened under the hood. its comin from right at the top of the valve cover.

not valve cover i guess that would be the cam cover.

Yep, VVti actuator. Now you get to decide if you want to have them replace it. If the dealer has done it before... They probably can't hurt it if they have done a few before. If not, they'll use it as a learning tool which may be good or bad.

Me, I have zero trust in our nearest dealer and have seen some wild habits there. I'd have no doubt that the various little grey sensor plugs would be yanked off by the wire like a teenager would and then more intermittent unprovable problems begin. And back I go over and over to chase down what they messed up by manhandling things hungover.

Does it sound like this?

I had the rattle issue like the video with my 2009 vibe 1.8l with 50kmiles on it. I ended up changing my intake vvti cam gear to fix the issue as gm never recalled it.The new gear from the toyota looked different than the original it had an extra steel dowel on the out side as compared to the original where it was on the inside. My rattle on start up went away.

well now i cant decide if it's worth fixin after reading the post above. the car still runs great, gas mileage is as good as ever, if it's something thats not gonna be a problem i can deal with it cause i'm gonna drive the car till it dies or i get sick of it which may be soon. i've never had a fast car so i've got my eyes on a mustang, challenger, or maybe a frs for gas mileage.
