Factory sub works, but it's boomy and muddy. So, any faves out there? And I don't want to add a box. I am really kind of surprised at how bad this JBL/Vifa sounds. I even tried flipping the woofer phase and running with the pass through door open. Crutchfield recommends a Focal for $997USD. Not.

crutchfield wasnt accurate in their guide for a 2007 avalon jbl 2013 avalon jbl 2018 camry stock ended up just figuring it out myself
also managed to fit focal ps 165fx in all doors of the 2018 camry even though crutchfield said it wouldnt fit
car audio is already custom might as well spend the extra 5 minutes and do it right the first time

I know the you stated that you don't want to add a box but I think if you any decent upgrade you should at least get one. My recommendation is a small mono amp with JL microsub 8". It is very very small and does not take much trunk space at all, you can even put it behind your seat. The sound is amazing and people always compliment on how deep the bass sound.

Yes. More or less. I am kicking myself that when I had the rear deck out to fix the third brake light (carefully take it apart, resolder all the joints) and the shade ( take it completely apart , there is plenty of what looks like CV joint grease, lube everything with it, repack the gears too) that I didn't pull out the sub and measure. Sorry PS creepy, the ads on the sidebar are my search at Parts Express for a sub.

Swap out the tweeter's electrolytic caps for $5 poly film and foil caps you will be amazed. You will need a decent 25-30 watt pencil type iron, some speaker wire as the caps will need to mounted inside the door panel or A pillar. 4.7uf is the size. Parts express, Madisound, sell these Solen are popular, I find the blue Jantzen StandardZ caps sound much smoother. Avoid the PE house brand, they are terrible, almost as bad as what you are pulling out. Desolder the leads for the stock caps and pull it out. Hook up the leads from the pigtail to the tweeter posts. Here is why I say a decent iron, because you need to get this soldered quickly so as not to melt the plastic. There is no polarity here, but a rule of thumb is to do the same thing left and right for the best stereo image.

Replacing the factory sub and using the same location is a no go. It will never sound good. You need at least a small box. Modern subs can be squeezed into amazingly small spaces and still sound good.

I recommend a 10 inch infinity kappa in a 1.5 cubic foot box. That will give you clear, tight bass with some authority.

Thanks. My car is full of tool boxes and calibration equipment 4 trips a week. Also Avalon rear springs seem underdesigned for any extra weight ( I have new KYB loaded struts) which throws off the rear toe. I would love to chuck in a Decware Wicked One bass horn For anyone reading this switching the surround on or off, depends on the song, one setting has cleaner bass. Madonna Immaculate off, Saving Jane, on. Heart D&B off, BuckinghamNicks, depends...
