My 2012 Camry Hybrid is too new to really know what my real average MPG is yet but since I got my new TCH I find myself driving less aggressively than I normally do on my older 2001 Camry. Tha's a good thing, I think.

Anyway last night I had to give my son a ride to wrestling practice, 12 miles drive, I got the best MPG on my TCH yet.

Hey thanks, pls do post back after your 1000 mile trip. I would like to compare notes.

This summer I'll also be driving my TCH from DC to Miami (1000 miles also) with wife and 2 kids. Wife says to take Odyssey minivan instead of TCH (for comfort), I tell her we'll be saving $$$ on gas with TCH (and more fun).

Although, we'll be going to the beach in Florida some, I hate the thought of getting sands and stuff in the brand new car. :( may have to get them All-Weather Floor mats just for trip.

Anyway, I'm already planning to drive mostly at night straight from DC to Miami, wife and kids will sleep in car at night. Wife will take over driving in the morning around Jacksonville, FL.

cheers.

All weather mats

The first thing I got was car mats (all-weather) the mats that we paid extra for are poor quality, Your heel will grinding in the carpet and will put a permanent
wear mark. Maybe black one won't show it. I went to Juiced Hybrid (see link) and got Weather Tech mat and I like them, remove the Toyota mats and packed them away. I added the back mats and over $99 it's free shipping.

http://www.juicedhybrid.com/Camry-Hybrid-All-Weather-Floor-Mats-p/w255.htm

Also, click on the camera to the right, I put a picture of my leather seats and it my show the mats. The link above will work too.

Got 300 miles on my new XLE tch. On a 150 mile round trip (4-lane dry-desert highway) to El Paso and back I got 54 mpg. This included some stop and go traffic in the evening when people were getting off work. On the highway I drove rather slow around 55 and some at 60 due to the new engine.

My usual round trip to our local town and back is 33 miles. The '07 tch got 52 mpg average over 47 tanks of gas. This new XLE tch got 50.1 on a few of these trips. I had driven the '07 tch at 40 to 45 mph to town and back and 30/40 when in town. I'm now driving the XLE this same way for comparison.

My goal is to consistently get 60 to 62 mpg on my 33 mile loop to town by driving similar speeds` as when I got the 52 with the '07 tch. I'm hoping I can accomplish this once the engine is broke in.

I mentioned in another thread that I had just swapped the oem bridgestone's for a new set of michelin primacy mxv4 (93V) toyota oem tires per tire rack. These are low rolling resistant tires with the michelin green-x on the sidewall. I'm running 40.5 psi nitrogen in them, tested just after dark when the tires are cool.

Update: 500 mile trip MPG

Looks like I averaged 40.1 on a 500 mile trip all Highway in south central USA. Traveling south into a headwind. Speed limits range 65 to 70 then in Texas 75. and 75MPH is not a good thing for gas mileage.....
Opinion is this car rides just as good as my heavy 2005 Acura RL and the sound system is great. Passing speed and on ramp speeds are no problem whatsoever. Navigation system good, smaller screen than the RL but in Texas they changed some exit #s due to road construction so the mapping is a little flawed. Found all the Starbucks though..Ha!

More mileage updates later next week...

Driving to a few small towns about 15 miles to each I found my very best speed is 50 to 52 mpg with cruise. This give me the best mpg so far but I only have 400 miles on this new XLE hybrid.

I refilled my tank to start new driving here around the city and to some small towns near here. I'm now down 1/8th tank below full so I got a long way to go to get a good tank reading.

I fill my tank on the low nozzle setting. Once it auto shuts off I put on the cap. I did note it took 100 miles to get it down to the full mark which may be a good thing. I will learn quickly on this car after driving the '07 TCH for 4 1/2 years.

update_Saturday night I did more city driving and am up to 53 mpg and a little over 400 miles on the car. I hope I can stay around this 53 figure till I use rest of the 3/4 tank of gas that's left.

47 mpg

After 5,550 miles my last fillup was for 698 miles 14.34 gallons and 47mpg, using the actual miles divided by gallons calculation. The readout on the car was a bit higher. This is almost 7 mpg over my first tank. I do have the tires inflated around 40 psi and I was in some stop and go traffic when the mileage goes up quite a bit.

For XLE owners from Edmunds site..

This is interesting:

From Edmunds:

EPA-estimated fuel economy for the Camry Hybrid LE is 43 city mpg/39 highway mpg and 41 mpg combined. Interestingly, the XLE achieves 40/38/40 due to the higher rolling resistance of its larger wheels/tires.
Mechanical (Wonder if this is what L4 means? engine size 2.5 L and inline cylinders 4)

Engine & Performance

  • Base engine size: 2.5 L
  • Cam type: Double overhead cam (DOHC)
  • Cylinders: inline 4
  • Valves: 16
  • Valve timing: Variable
  • Horsepower: 200 hp @ 5700 rpm
  • Turning circle: 36.7 ft.

  • Base engine type: hybrid

This was in the Fuelly extended FAQ.

What do the engine type abbreviations such as L4 and V6 mean?
We use "codes" to identify different engine types, and they're not always self evident. Here are the most common codes and what they mean:

  • L4 = Inline-four cylinder. This is the most common type of engine across cars at Fuelly. (Variations such as L6 or Straight-six are rare in comparison.)
  • V6 = V6 engine. This one actually makes sense. The V refers to the shape of the engine. This is a very common engine. (We show the option for a V4 engine, but this engine only existed in a few rare cars.)
  • H4 = Hybrid four cylinder. We use H4 and H6 to refer to four and six cylinder engines that also use electricity to help with fuel economy. Subaru also makes a "horizontal" engine that we use H4 and H6 for in Subarus only. (If you know engines, this can also be confused with H engines, another rare engine type.)

just came back from my first long stretch with new 2012 TCH (3 week old)

Been getting 40 to 44 in comute on a regular base :)

this week-end we took it down to Mqanchester, NH From Montreal, went to Boston twice and to Main always back and forth from Manchester, NH. my numbers are showing about just under 40 mpg for the trip, did drop a bit while on 89 in Vermont (Green Mountains!) I guess the average for the whole trip is around 38 MPG and this is most on cruise control...

1000 mile trip

Yellow bugs and good gas mileage!

To Austin, TX 40.1 MPG driving at 70MPH (sometimes the speed limit went to 75. Into a slight headwind from the south.

From Austin to Hot Springs, AR 40.8 slight crosswind. Yellow bugs that stain the white paint ever so slightly...

Around town few red lights 43.9 MPG so far.

HH20, sounds like you mpg is really accurate for your speeds. Today I went to see The Avengers movie. I was running late and had to drive 70 speeding in some zones including the bypass. I had a 15/18 mph tailwind I had read on my home wx station before I left. I read 40 mpg at 70 and a places where their was a very slight upgrade, it dropped to 38 mpg.

I did some rather hard acceleration. A few times winding the engine to 3500 and another time to 3650, pulling the instant mpg system indicator down to 5/10 area. I use the digital scan gauge II to see the rpm readings. I looked at my mpg from home to the theater, and it was into the upper 20's. My wife met me to go eat after the movie. I drove easy the 10 miles at 50 mph to another town to eat. It was mostly downhill (auto EV mode) on the the way back. I was then back to 50 mpg.

I slowed down on the other 16 miles home as the traffic really left up when heading south into a lesser 7 pm wind. I was on battery a lot at 40 mph with cruise as always. The MID reading was up to 67 mpg when I parked in the driveway. I drive 25 with cruise on the rather rough 1.6 mile paved country road to our house, which really give me a kick in mpg.

I'm somewhere between 400 and 500 miles on the XLE tch clock so far. Hope when it breaks-in I will see some easier and higher mpg numbers.

47.7 mpg and 93 miles on the car

At first I was a bit worried about the MPG. I was getting 37.5 from Seattle to Redmond WA in my new XLE with the HDD Nav system.
But to my relief, after I reset my MPG display, I saw that I was getting 47.7 from Redmond to South of Bellevue WA.
I think I like this car. It sure is an improvement from an '05 Neon that would get 25 / City 34 Highway

93 miles on the car!

...wait 'til you turn off both ECO and EV buttons and step on it. That instant response and 200hp is incredible! ...and then, check your average mpg and STILL get 38.8mpg! That's what happened to me when I was sort of in a hurry yesterday not to be late for a Mother's Day dinner...70 miles mostly highway.

I'm at 58.1 mpg at 713 miles with 1/8th tank left. I will post a few pictures once I reach the E mark. The display shows about 68 miles to go.
That would seem to suggest total miles in a tank of 781, and with a capacity of 17 gallons in the tank, a gas mileage of 46 mpg?

Not sure if it is a concern on the Camry Hybrid but some people don't like to run a car dry that has an electric fuel pump, for fear of damaging the pump. I had a pump fail on an older standard Camry and it was an expensive/painful fix. I don't recall ever running out of fuel on it, so it may have been totally unrelated.

Since I brought my car I was average about 37.5 MPG. That's with 30% city and 70% highway driving. I have a heavy foot and don't like being passed. I need to change my driving habits some how. Anyways I am still impress with the TCH's power and gas mileage. My old car before I traded it in was 2011 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, which I average about 26 MPG.

This weekend I drove from Kansas City to Wichita, KS and average only 33.5 MPG. I was kinda upset but then again it was still better than my last ride.
Driving down to Wichita, KS going about 70 - 78 and cruised mostly 75 MPH and going against 25 - 35 MPH winds heading from the south. You think Kansas was all flat but it's not, a lot of hills. Speed limit is now 75 MPH so going right at that speed, will always get passed.
Heading back was better 35.5 but now fighting again 15 MPH north wind, never winning. Anyways total cargo weight was about 700lbs so that might have something to do with the gas mileage too. Need to start packing light but kinda hard with a family.

Any thoughs? Go 70 MPH instead?

Lighten up on the lead foot...lol...I do 70-75mph on a 150 mile regular ride to Southampton and back, about 90% of it highway and still average 40mpg. In town, I average about 47-50mpg. I'm conscious about keeping the left gauge below the "power" section and try and keep the needle in the "eco" range.

Here is the full tank results on my new '12 XLE hybrid. My advice is to never run below 1/4 tank. I check the accuracy of the fuel gauge once on ever new car I buy. With my new XLE TCH I can drive rather normal and still get some nice mpg numbers.

Check out the accuracy of the miles left and where the needle is just above the Empty mark. The MID read 58 mpg at 803.8 miles. Calculated that came out to 54.09. Lots of possible variables, car not level, gas pump pressure to slow or fast. Is why I trust the MID best as it don't vary, even though is may read 2 mpg higher. The Phillips 66 station stopped using the 10% ethanol back in March according to the sign on the pump. I did this by driving slow at 40/45 and sometimes 25 mph using the cruise. I did much of this driving to town on a old seldom used paved highway. My normal speeds on my loop to town and back are, 40 city 50 highway with cruise and AC during the summer.

Phillips 66 regular 86 octane fuel, Toyota 0W-20 synthetic oil, Michelin MXV4 Primacy LRR green-X tires. 40.5 psi nitrogen measured at night after they have cooled. Chevron and Shell are my other favorite gasolines. Phillips here is a top tier gas and lower priced than most non-top tier brands.

Real 2012 TCH gas tank capacity? Auto gas pump shutoff?

For the past few gas tanks, I was trying to fill more gas after the pump shutoff. My concern was that the shutoff is not reliable and may miss 1-2 gallons and I wanted to make sure I report accurate numbers. But... the issue I wonder is 1) what is the real capacity of the 2012 Camry Hybrid gas tank. Or in other words, how much gas can you pump before it may spill outside? 2) how accurate are the auto shut off gas pumps at stations (assuming one follow the right procedure and tightly connect the rubber neck of the hose to fit over the tank opening)?

As for 2), well I do not even know how accurate are the gas pumps measurements.. we had reports of 10% to 15% being off (i.e. showing more gas but really pumping less to add to the gas station's profits). Assuming this is not an issue (I used only Hess station, big station with a lot of turn around customers, but last time was a Shell station that seems to be higher priced vs. stations around it with private labels). So I will focus here on point number 1) based on my last tank of gas experience. I was able to find the attached post:

This shows 15 gallons pumped per auto shut off at the station. But I have a similar tank with a different experience:

and

That is almost 2 gallons difference at similar remaining cruising range (10 miles mine, 5 for WhiteSands) with similar indication of close to Empty gas gauge.

My computer MPG by the car was 49.5 as you can see, but if I calculate based on actual fill of 17 gallons almost, its only 42.5 MPG.

So... I think I will start using the auto shut off at the gas pump and wont try add more. Though, I would assume that over a year or so, the actual MPG can be compued based on actual gas filled and miles traveled, subject to point number 2, which is that gas stations may try to get an extra 10-15% profit.....

What do you guys think?

By the way, I have not done any ultra special driving at low speeds, or got the tiers at over 40 PSI when cold etc other such tricks. Just driven with Auto cruise control when possible.

58 MPGs is the highest indication I have ever seen! Congrats. The best trip indication I got was 55 MPGs (per trip indication in the center display is shown from the time the car started till shut off, per trip, not accumulated). The best tank indication I got was 49.5 MPGs which was the last tank but actual it was (after filling 2 gallons or so more than the auto shut off stopped the pump at) 42.5 MPG.

Yeah, I'm going to trust YOUR numbers and never let "Cammie" get below 1/4 tank. I don't have the stomach to let the gage get *this* low!

I've also heard that it's very hard on the fuel pump to consistently leave so little gas in the tank.

I can only imagine how much a new fuel pump costs for a car like this.

Thanks for doing this research and posting the photos! Very helpful!!

My "brand new" 2012 Camry XLE got about 41 on a 700-mile round trip to NC, but I did 75 mph much of the way. Now in town, I drive like a little old lady and this thing does FANTASTIC. I spend a lot of my time driving around in residential areas, looking for Sears kit homes (long story), but that's when the Camry really shines.

The pic below shows the gas mileage from one of those slow-moving, 45-minute trips. I'm in awe that a car THIS comfortable can go 65 miles on one gallon of gas. These are the BEST of circumstances, and I didn't go more than 30 mph, but still...amazing!
