Hello everyone,

Initially, I thought I found the correct Denso spark plug for my 2012 Toyota matrix 1.8l. As I was about to submit my order online from Rock Auto, I found another spark plug with similarities and having doubts.

Toyota booklet spec says:
DENSO SC20HR11
----------------------------------------------------
I searched online and DENSO SC20HR11 points to Toyota Part number: 9091901253. I searched this part number on Rock Auto website and this is the only Denso spark plug is available:
DENSO 3444 Iridium Long Life; Pre-Set Gap: 0.044"
Link: More Information for DENSO 3444
----------------------------------------------------

I did some additional research online saying DENSO SC20HR11 was replaced by DENSO SC16HR11 . I search SC16HR11 on Rock Auto website and this is the only Denso spark plug is avaiable:
DENSO 3499 Iridium Long Life; Pre-Set Gap: 0.044
Link: More Information for DENSO 3499
----------------------------------------------------

The only key differences is Manufacturer Heat Range.
DENSO 3444:
20
DENSO 3499: 16

ChatGPT said:

"The heat range number indicates the spark plug's ability to dissipate heat. A lower number signifies a hotter plug, which is suitable for engines operating under higher temperatures or loads. Conversely, a higher number denotes a cooler plug, ideal for engines that run at lower temperatures.

Compatibility with 2012 Toyota Matrix 1.8L

For the 2012 Toyota Matrix equipped with the 1.8L engine, the DENSO 3499 spark plug is the recommended choice. This plug is designed to meet the specific requirements of Toyota's 1.8L engine, ensuring optimal performance and longevity. The DENSO 3444, with its higher heat range, is better suited for different engine types and may not provide the ideal performance for the Matrix's engine. "

Among these options:

  • DENSO Spark Plug Iridium Long Life 3499: Specifically designed for the 2012 Toyota Matrix 1.8L, ensuring compatibility and optimal performance.
  • DENSO Spark Plug Iridium Long Life 3444: While a high-quality spark plug, its higher heat range may not be ideal for the Matrix's engine.
For the best performance and longevity, it's advisable to choose the DENSO 3499 spark plug for your 2012 Toyota Matrix 1.8L.

In summary:
  • Lower heat range (hotter) = better for cooler-running engines or stop-and-go driving
  • Higher heat range (colder) = better for high-performance or heavily loaded engines
So for your Toyota Matrix 1.8L, you'd want the manufacturer-recommended heat range (DENSO 3499), as that matches the engine’s operating temperature. "

Would like to confirm if ChatGPT is correct? To purchase DENSO 3499 for 2012 Toyota matrix 1.8 (Base) on Rock Auto.?

Thank you.

Yes
Canada toyota dealership sell each spark plug $20-25. Four plugs cost $100.

Rock auto has same plugs for $48cad for four which is half price. Shipping $17 from USA to Canada.

I will also buy air filter and engine filters. Cost benefit is better.

Only debating between denso 3444 vs denso 3499 at the moment.

The Denso 3444 SC20HR-11 have not been discontinued, Rock Auto is going to offer what plug will have the widest coverage of vehicle fitment.
You could just use NGKs.
Are they cost prohibitive to buy the OEM's from Toyota?
