I recently purchased a 2013 Camry XLE Hybrid and immediately noticed that the stereo "spikes" the volume at random times. I don't know if it is the reception or the unit itself. I purchased the upgrade for the top stereo system and larger screen. Contacted the dealer and Toyota and have been told that this is normal? Anyone else having this problem? It is worse in HD radio. Help!

I can't get any local HD radio stations where I live even from El Paso. At night around 8 pm I can pick up KRLD 1080 am HD here in Alamogordo, NM while sittiing in the walmart parking lot. The station would be 600 miles from where I was listening. KRLD is a very high powered clear channel station that was only a mile from where I was raised in Garland, Texas.

I'm spoiled listening to satellite and FM radio. With the am HD radio at that distance the HD would kick in and out, but when it was 'in' it was very loud. The HD sounded clear, but a little shrill and not that much bass compared to the wider bandwidth of the FM band. The missing bass may be due to the extreme distance from the station that night.

If you have a passenger with you have them to watch the HD indicator and see if it stays steady when the volume goes up like you say. It may be affected by buildings reflecting the HD signal or how far away the radio transmitter is located like maybe 20 or so miles distant.

I just bought 2013 Camry hyrid XLE. I noticed the same thing. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the HD reception going in/out. While in HD mode, the sound is clearer and seems "louder". When it falls off, the sound dulls a bit and seems softer. Its especially noticeable in AM. We notice the same thing in my carpool partners BMW with HD radio. i have a 2 hour commute (round trip) thru rolling hills, and we drive thru many HD "dead spots".

One way to check (I havent done yet), is to turn off HD, which I think you can do under setup. I will give it a whirl.

I notice this only in HD radio. I tend to not listen to OTA radio anyway though so it really isn't an issue. I either listen to tunes on my USB drive, my phone via bluetooth or satellite radio. Nearly all of my presets are to satellite radio signals. Only thing I'm pissed about is that I have to pay extra for Howard Stern. I had a Sirius tuner in my last car but they gave me some horseshit line of crap about them being separate companies.
