Have they actually pulled the headunit out and checked the wire responsible for triggering the night mode?

 

They haven't investigated anything. I have to schedule an appointment. I drove it tonight and we noticed that it did switch to the night mode but then it switched back. Thanks for the reply.

 

So did it fix itself , or still having the problem? Mine has never automatically switched, has this ever worked for anyone?

 

Still have the problem. I'm gonna have to take it back to the dealer. Another day wasted. Thanks.

My 2012 has a dedicated "keep in Day Mode" button on the screen once you hit the DISP button to avoid going dark when turn headlights/wipers on. Probably won't help since 2013 is the new nav system though...

 

Mine won't go into night mode at all unless I manually set it to night mode. Thx.

 

The issue has been solved. I was playing with the 'setup' button on the side of the nav screen. I noticed that it was set on permanant 'day mode'. I unchecked the box and the problem has gone away. I don't understand why the techs at Toyota didn't know this. Thanks.

On my 2013 Highlander Limited, the DISP on the steering wheel controls only the small monitor above the nav/radio unit. To control the display of the nav/radio, don't you have to use the SETUP button on the right side of the display? It seems to make a difference what level you have yours headlights switched to as far as what position the display remembers. The Owner's Manual is a little confusing in its explanation.

The night mode is turned on automatically when you turn on your headlights. You can override it to stay in day mode during the day by enabling that Day Mode button, since in some states having wipers on requires to have headlights on, like on a rainy day. Having the display dim during the day makes it very hard to see though.
