Folks,

Just got a new Camry SE with the 2.5L. Seems like the engine has a bit of a whine to it at start up and a bit less after warm up. Not used to hearing that. Is it common on these? This is my first Toyota purchase.

Thanks in advance.....

Cool. Thanks guys. I have had Hondas in the past and they were quieter at start up and idle. I'm not gonna worry about it then... I really enjoy it (SE model) so far.... really diggin' the gas mileage.

On another note, what oil filter wrench have you guys decided on as the best value? Seems like some are more a POS than others.

Thanks again for the quick responses.....

I just ordered this one: Assenmacher Specialty Tools TOY 640 Oil Filter Socket Wrench for Toyota from an online source (it has a namesake that includes a huge rainforest and river in South America).

The reviews on that filter wrench are very good across the board.

A 1500 RPM idle will cause drivetrain shock when the transmission is suddenly engaged at that speed. All cars run a high, very rich idle when cold to help get the catalytic converter lit off (most these days run different valve timing to speed the process, and cars in the 90's would use secondary air pumps).

You're doing the right thing by waiting for the idle to come down - your transmission will thank you in the future. My Gen 5 V6 would make a huge thump if you put it in gear before the idle settled down.

Once the idle settles down, there is no further need to wait for the car to "warm up", especially in the winter. Put it in gear and drive gently until the temperature gauge comes up.

I noticed this whine noise too...loud on cold start, quiets down as engine warms up.

It sounds like a bad or noisy hydraulic steering pump...

only there is no steering pump? I'll ask the SA when I take it in for its 'free' service. Its probably "characteristic of the vehicle."

I have the same issue with mine. 2014 Camry SE 2.5L. took it to the dealer who told me this is normal and they all do it. I started up another model on the lot and even started up a 2015 Camry 2.5L and they both had the same sound. I was told it is a valve within the air intake. I submitted a complaint to Toyota headquarters and was informed if Toyota receives enough complaints on this a TSB could be released to fix it. IF YOU HAVE THIS ISSUE SUBMIT A COMPLAINT TO TOYOTA!!!!!!

Well fella's I no longer own the 2014.5 Camry XLE 4cyl. I agree the engine was pretty whiny. It seems normal for these engines with some of them being even more notorious than others. I agree I wasn't used to that kind of sound. Also the shifting definitely could not stand the confusing transmission among other things as well.

Are those the only two reasons you sold the car? If so I hope you find a car that you like. Sounds like it's going to be hard. My camry is the nicest car I have ever had, it has its quirks sure, but ever car does and this car has had less quirks than any Honda, ford, Chevy or nissan than I have ever owned. Hope you like what you end up with.

I had the dealer perform the included oil changes up to 25k on my 2.5L I4 engine. I noticed after the first oil change that the engine seemed to whine more/louder than usual. After some trouble shooting I realized the oil level was about 0.25-0.5 inches above the full mark. It's almost like the dealer wasn't replacing the filter leaving it full of dirty oil and in addition pouring in 5 quarts of new oil which I believe per the book with new filter should take a little less than 5 quarts. I now repeatedly insist the dealer keep the oil level at full line and no higher. Since then I have not noticed the engine whining as much or as loud at idle or during acceleration.
