2015 Camry water in trunk?

Hi guys my mom drives a 2015 camry and I took it for a drive during a rainy day (never opened the trunk). 2 Days later she opens it to find it wet on the driver's side area.

Any idea how it may have got in there? The car is at 50,000 miles, no accidents. I have yet to inspect the spare tire region to see if theres any water pooled up there. Will report back on that.

leaking trunk seal. Look it over to see if it has been damaged.

Easy way to check is get someone small to lay in the trunk on a COOL sunny day, close the lid, and see if you see light getting in. Have a second person to help get them out if needed.

The car has a moonroof.

Wouldn't it be easier if i splashed some water of the trunk then opened it to look? We've gotten car washes before and its never happened.

Would this be something thats covered under any warranty by the dealership? Probably not? I'm a second owner, I bought it certified. The 1 year warranty is up

finding a trunk leak is a bit of a pain but not as bad as an interior leak. for starters, remove everything in the trunk including both side carpet panels, the floor carpet, and the spare tire with tools. depending how bad the leak is, there may be water pooled up in the side wells or spare tire well...... that will start to pinpoint where the water is coming in

next check the sunroof drains, they are clear tubes that run behind the rear tire on either side. sometimes they can come out of their mount causing the water to pool up inside

if you still cant find it you can do what i did...... sit in the trunk and close the lid and have someone spray everywhere around the trunk. around the seams, taillights, and sunroof..... use a flashlight to see where the water is coming from. on my old camry i ended up finding a leak at a body seam that was pinched and not repaired after a minor rear end accident

Late response but we just began having rain here.

Here's a video

as you can see there's water in the spare tire region. Looks like it's mostly towards the section of the trunk closest to the rear of the vehicle.

We just had rain recently here so that explains my late response. I have already tried getting in the trunk and having someone pour water of the seams of the trunk lid, but no water gets inside. I will try and find the drain tubes for the moonroof, behind the rear tires correct?

On my 2001, if it rains very hard, the driver side of the trunk will fill with water. I resealed the trunk seal and I think that solved it for the most part since it now only gets wet if it rains VERY hard. I think the remaining water comes in through the vent behind the bumper. You may need to take apart the bumper to see it... trunk leaks can get quite annoying. Be sure to clean the trunk drain tracks of leaves and stuff that can clog.

I've found the source of the leak in my trunk. This is just after rainfall yet again. Can someone explain if this is coming from the moonroof tubing being clogged??

Are you sure there were no accidents? It sure looks like the metal sheets are pulled away from each other above the carpeting and on the right top corner of the picture there is a hole in metal sheet which is not even. This does not look like original assembly. Maybe it's the angle of the picture that is misleading. Can you take couple more pics from different angles and also show where this is.

I had a 1996 honda civic ex with a sunroof. When the car was about 14 year old the rubber check valve failed on the drain tubes of the sunroof. The check valve is what sat in the hole in the metal and is what the clear plastic drain tube connected to to let the water drain out of the car.
The water was always in the spare tire well.

Like the other posters said take everything out of the trunk including the lining. Then sit in the trunk and run a hose on top of the car to see the leak. That is how I found it on my civic and I got the check valves from the dealer. The right passenger one was leaking but I bought both for $1.95 each so I really broke the bank. :)

Hopefully yours will be as easy to find. Not hard but mostly just a pain.

Looks like it's coming from the sheet metal seam toward the top of the video.. I see like a rusty spot in the video too. Pause the video at 5seconds and follow the drip mark straight up and you'll see where the water is leaking through the seam. The seam looks to be deformed like the vehicle had been in an accident.

The vehicle could have been in an accident and repaired by the dealer without reporting it to CARFAX - happens all the time - CARFAX means nothing these days.

For comparison, here is a photo off that seam on the right side of my trunk (same construction as the left side).

So am I screwed? I've already passed the comprehensive warranty period of 1 year/12,000 miles, (it's a certified vehicle). Is my best bet taking it to the dealership or an independent shop? I will post better pictures in a few hours.

I would take it to a trusted body shop so they could fill that seam with the proper sealant.
Or if your a DIY'r - Remove the trunk seal and inner trunk lining to get a better look at what your up against. Get some proper sealant from the autoparts store and start sealing it all up... I know I've used a windshield seal repair sealant before on leaks like this that held up for many years.

I am a DIY'er but I dont know if I want to remove the liner (that requires pulling of those plastic tabs right?) just yet, especially since the car is like-new pretty much.

another question, if it was the moonroof drain tubes that were the culprit, where would I see the leak into the trunk?

Ok, I did some more in depth looking and noticed these differences between the right portion of the trunk area/body and left.
Here are more pics and comparisons of both sides. The water leaks from the left side of the trunk as previously mentioned.
Does this point to signs of previous collision?? Checked CarFax and no accidents reported.

Here is the area we are looking at:

Also, after lifting the liner a little bit, the color of the inside of the body panels are different:

There is a gap by the where the windshield meets the trunk:

If you want fix that yourself remove any loose paint and sealer around the seam, clean the area then use some paintable seam sealer. The rust can be touched up with some paint or if you're lazy hit it with Fluid Film. Once the leak is fixed the rust will spread slowly if at all.

I use this stuff I'm sure you can find something similar

IMO the dealer should fix that for free.

Is that overspray on the trunk seal? I meant the underside that whole area needs to be inspected carefully it would be nice to see the paperwork for the repair try to get that from the dealer.
