I think it looks alot better than the previous generation. Still very happy with my 15 highlander. Here is the link. http://www.edmunds.com/honda/pilot/2016/?sub=suv
Well, with the VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) troubles Honda continues to have with their 3.5 V6...... the lawsuits, the lemon-law suits, the vibration and misfire complaints, etc..... it sure doesn't help that they just churned out another horse-faced turd.

Very ugly and disappointing. Where they get their designers - only the shadow knows.

Judging ONLY by these photos:
Styling seems dull & uninspired--Honda rounded-off the old Pilot--looks like a CRV on steroids & nothing like the design study released earlier.
Push-button shifter is interesting.
I like the digital speedo & the (apparent) LED interior lighting.
Wheels are actually uglier than the Chrometecs.

A yawner for me....

I am not very impressed with the exterior. It looks too much like CRV/Odyssey and reminds very little of MDX. I actually think highlander looks more toward MDX than the new Pilot.

The interior is very nice and thoughtful. VCM engine is a huge no-no .

I am glad I did not wait.

^ exactly. what a colossal disappointment for those waiting for a stylish Honda product. i predict an early refresh like what Honda did with the current Civic after its first year, and then again after its 2nd or 3rd year.

the photos make the new pilot look so unwieldy and bulbous. the wheel offset is way off just like the new MDX.

the interior might be OK, but who cares if the exterior is such a mess. and those wheels...

What's not to like about a vehicle where you can charge and hide 4 Ipads? Just kidding. Got rid of the Highlander yesterday but not in the market for a new Pilot. Looks fine to me but only children can access and/or sit in the 3rd seat just like the Highlander. The 9 speed tranny will have issues. All these SUV's look so similar. The price tag will be higher than the Highlander for sure.

I am surprised Sweeney did not lock this thread yet!

If the useless captain's chairs remain a 2nd row option in higher level trims on the Pilot then this does have more of a chance of being my next vehicle, (unless that gets resolved for the 2016 HL and a limited is offered with a bench). I will wait some more to see the build options....

Style wise, it looks inoffensive, as is the point of this utility oriented family truckster segment (go to Lexus, Acura, VW/Audi for style at a premium), and there is not that much difference between Toyota and Honda here IMHO; maybe the HL is a little more masculine with the truck nose though. Both have done well cleaning up the dash and center stack.

2016 Honda Pilot or 2014 Toyota Highlander?

Well I am glad I didn't wait for the Pilot upgrade or downgrade depending on your view. What we liked about the Highlander was in no particular order, the front storage shelf, the front storage/arm rest, and really importantly the rear vents on the roof, and the rear glass open only option(well standard on most trim levels including our Limited). We have 2 Siberian Huskies(our kids, LOL) and we need good ventilation in the rear part of the vehicle, and all other vehicles had very poor ventilation in the back, some have floor vents, some have a "B" pillar vent or a center console vent, but that is it. Don't any of these designers remember when they were kids? I can remember my parents sweating up front, but we are still freezing in back, or there freezing up front and we were sweating in back, yes most vehicles are a little better now, and some actually have 3 zone climate control, a lot still have only 2 zones and the rear is tied to either the driver or passenger. The rear glass open only is a God sent if you have dogs, you don't have to worry about them trying to jump out while you open the rear door just to put something small in like a couple of bags etc.
And our Siberians like it cool in the back, and we can stay perfectly warm in front, the only other time that happened, was the one year I borrowed the work Yukon to go out to BC, the dogs loved that having a nice cool breeze blowing on them. Last year we went to BC for Christmas and had to drive with the rear window down on out Taurus so the dogs would settle down, we had to keep our jackets on and have the heat on high on our feet to stay warm. So we knew what we needed, but didn't want to pay through the nose for a full size SUV, or buy one of the Big 3 as they are not very well built or reliable, plus they loose their value faster than I am loosing hair ! Just my Wife and My 2 cents worth. >:D

It looks like they did a good job in the interior (over the outgoing model), a lot of built-in features that Honda is good at cluing in on (look at all those ports in the back of the center console). The outside looks very boring, and like every other midsized SUV.

I have a friend that has a late model Kia Sorento, and it recently had an accident and was in the shop so he picked me up in a Hyundai Sante Fe, and I didn't realize I was in a totally different vehicle until he pointed it out. The Piolt looks like them now, too.

That's why we like and chose the HL, inside and out it looks different (and better!).

Well I guess I going to be the only one so far to say then new Pilot looks pretty good, except for the wheels. I guess that's because I never really warmed up to the looks of the 3rd generation Highlander, which was the reason for getting a 2013. To many of us 2nd generation owners, the new Highlander's style looks forced and leans to much toward car styling. That's probably the reason the Pilot looks good to me.

Well it looks boring IMO and even more conservative than the HL. I do like the back however--nice taillights. It looks the worse from the front, like the CRV as others have said.

Honda/Acura has long needed to fire their design team. Only nice looking vehicles are the Accord sedan and MDX. Toyota's not that much better though. All that hoopla for a new "sporty" Camry and it comes out looking like a$$.

There are some things in the new Pilot that don't make sense to me, functionally or aesthetically.

Functionally;
1. I hope they still have the option of a 2nd row bench either 60/40 or 33/33/33.
2. They need to give the driver a decent armrest, even if they raised it up, they could make storage underneath.
3. I'm 6'5 and I've always found Honda's a bit cramped with the way the window controls protrude inwards and the center console is so wide, if feels very cramped. Why not put the shift left on the 'stick'. Does it really need to be a push button next to the cup holders?
4. Forget the 3rd row, if someone need a 3rd row they need to get a minivan or a full size SUV, give more room for the occupants in the first and 2nd rows.

Aesthetically;
1. Rear and side look good, some Acura elements to them, the front needs some work, what's with the chrome strip across the headlamp?
2. The wheels look like a bad photoshop, not my style
3. What the f is with black lower cladding, did someone in Japan have a sale and invite Toyota and Honda exclusively? It looks CHEAP.

Looks like an Odyssey on stilts, which is essentially what it is anyway. It looks like Honda is trying to meld the two cars into one.

The current model, while not great looking itself, is far better (and less boring) looking than this thing. :thumbdown :thumbsdow

I'm going to hold judgement until I see one in person. When I first saw pictures of the 2014 Highlander I was not impressed until I was able to see and drive one at a dealer. But from the pictures it's more appealing to me than the previous Pilot. The wife has a 2010 CRV and we will check out the Pilot when it's time to trade it in next year. Honda makes a quality vehicle IMO, my only complaint is road noise. Hopefully that's improved in the new Pilot.

Looks are subjective. I will be in a market for an suv in a few months and the Highlander Limited Platinum is on my list as well as this Pilot now. I love the front and side profile. Looks like a beefier version of the Accord and CRV which isn't a bad thing imo. The rear is meh but isn't ugly. The biggest question is how Honda will price this thing. My guess it will be slightly more expensive than the Highlander which I am willing to pay because of the following reasons. These are also the things I see it has over the Highlander.

Its a Bigger SUV

LED lights all around (Its pathetic a 45K HL Limited doesn't even have Hids)

More premium looking (subjective opinion. Highlander looks more rugged which is also a good thing too)

Now deal breakers for me for the Pilot is all this talk about the ZF 9spd transmission and the (VCM) cylinder management system. From what I've read online the transmission issue is all software related, not hardware. Lets hope Honda does a better job with the software than Jeep did. Also I would prefer to be able to deactivate the cylinder management system. I don't drive a lot of miles and I hate driving a car that is numb/unresponsive. The longevitiy of the ZF 9HP transmission is also in question here. I feel like that unit is gotten more bad press than good since it came out.

That said I would reserve my final judgement when I see the car in the flesh and go test drive it. The way I see it so far Honda did a great job compared to the previous two Pilots which I always though was one of the ugliest in the segment.

FWIW, lots of Jeep owners are not pleased with the ZF 9-speed tranny. However, this could be due to poor programming by Chrysler. Check out some Jeep forums. A well-respected & knowledgeable Honda expert on the Ridgeline Owners forum expressed quite a bit of shock that Honda was going forward with the 9-speed in the Pilot. He expected Honda to continue using the current 6-speed for at least a year or two.

Now to VCM. Although Honda has supposedly improved VCM, it has to be one of the worst "mileage-improving systems" ever conceived. We owned three VCM-equipped V6 Hondas, and all I can say about VCM is "NEVER AGAIN!" Vibrations, droning, poor throttle response, and gas mileage was still less than any similar Toyota V6 vehicle without VCM. It's most miserable. Plus, the Honda forums are full of lawsuit stories all claiming problems with VCM. It needs an "off" button, but doesn't have one.

A comment from the Gen2 Ridgeline forum re: VCM:

The Gen2 Ridgeline will likely have the NEW VCM (dual mode only {6 cyl, then 4 OR 3}) which is much improved over the previous three mode VCM {6 cyl, 4 cyl, 3 cyl).

Still, drive one & decide for yourself......
