2019 RAV4 Limited Navigation Map Update

My 2019 RAV4 Limited with Dynamic Navigation has never had a map update. In 2021 Massachusetts changed all the highway exit numbers. Today, 19 January 2023, I reached out to Toyota Customer Care (again) to inquire about a map update. This was after my local dealer told me it would be October or November this year and another dealer told me February 2023. Neither dealer could say if the new Massachusetts highway exit numbers would be included. Toyota Customer Care could, or would, not confirm any information about a map update for my vehicle other than it did not show up in their system. Even when escalated I was told it is in the hands of the dealers. I received no answer when I asked how the dealers would know the part number to order since it is my understanding the update is on a USB drive. They would not discuss with me Technical Service Bulletin T-SB-0119-20 that provides the dealer instructions for "Premium Audio Navigation Map Update Process".

Is there anyone who can help me get answers on when and if I can get a map update that has the current Massachusetts exit numbers? FYI, according to MassDOT, the old exit numbers will only be posted until September 2023.

Thanks in advance.

The TSB is pretty straightforward. Is your head unit expired? Are you maintaining the Dynamic Navigation Subscription?

May 13, 2021 Rev1
Applicability has been updated to include 2018 model year Sienna vehicles. ď‚· The Required Tools & Equipment section has been updated. Any previous printed versions of this bulletin should be discarded.

SUPERSESSION NOTICE:
The information contained in this bulletin supersedes Service Bulletin No. T-SB-0047-19.
The Required Tools & Equipment, Dynamic Navigation Update, and Embedded Navigation Update sections have been updated. Service Bulletin No. T-SB-0047-19 is obsolete and any printed versions should be discarded.

Introduction:
Some 2018 – 2020 model year Toyota vehicles equipped with a Premium Audio with Dynamic Navigation System require a Special Service Tool (SST) USB flash drive to update the map, points of interest, and system software. The SST is used with applicable vehicles to deliver the update; however, the process for generating license keys differs from previous generations.

Before attempting to perform a map update, the head unit’s expiration date must be checked. If the expiration date is still valid, a license key may be generated without the use of an activation card number. Updating the maps without the use of an activation card number is considered an Embedded Navigation Update (refer to pg. 10) and performing this process does not extend the duration of telematic map services. If the head unit’s expiration date is expired, or is expiring within the next 90 days, it should be recommended to the customer to purchase an activation number. Utilizing an activation number will initiate a Dynamic Navigation Update (refer to pg. 4). This Dynamic Navigation Update will perform the Embedded Navigation Update and provide telematic map services for a period of two years from the day that the Dynamic Navigation Update is performed.

Activation card numbers are provided in an activation card number pamphlet available through the normal parts ordering system. Follow the process in this bulletin to perform the update.

Hi. Thank you for the detailed reply. I have not maintained my Dynamic Navigation subscription (Toyota app shows auto renew on - even though it needs to be done though a dealer). I have maintained Safety Connect. I would reluctantantly pay a dealer $169 for a 2 year Dynamic Navigation subscription, but have not yet found someone to confirm I would have the current Massachusetts highway exit numbers. It is part number TOYA00CY1721. I have also yet to confirm I can install this myself rather than pay Toyota Service at a dealership to do it. I really want to update the base map and not rely on the cloud, in part due to Toyota's outrageous price of $169 for a 2 year subscription. At that rate I'd be better off just buying a standalone navigation unit, such as one of the Garmin's with lifetime map updates. FYI, my current map version is 05-68-51 [2018-03-01] and Map update service: Inactive, Expiration date: 2/11/2022. The map update ID is 1702-1910-4209-6495. I did check for map updates on a regular basis while Dynamic Navigation was active. I also periodically asked my local dealer, who I use for all service, about map updates and was always advised none was available. I was told this month that a map update will be available in Oct or Nov this year, but they have no idea what it will contain (such as correct Massachusetts exit numbers). Reaching out to Toyota corporate has been like spitting into a gale force wind. I have seldom dealt with customer service as uninformed and unwilling to listen. The fist level support tried. The person I was escalated to talk with was the worst. Did not make much effort to help and refused to escalate further.

I purchased the OTTOCAST U2-X Pro and it has so far worked very well converting Apple CarPlay to wireless Android Auto. Would recommend this as an option to trying to get anything useful from Toyota and the dealerships. I find Google Maps to be far superior to the Toyota Dynamic Navigation on the 2019 RAV4.
