I was on the HWY yesterday driving home from work, cruising at approximately 130 Km/h when suddenly the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT comes on, Saying CHECK ENGINE, VISIT YOUR DEALER, and about 10 seconds later DRIVE START CONTROL MULFUNCTION - VISIT YOUR DEALER. I noticed that the engine temperature started to climb up to above 80% heat, so I pulled over to the shoulder, shut the car off and called a tow truck which towed the vehicle to the dealership. It was dropped off at closing time, so just this morning they checked it out and told me the water pump is dead, and that it needs a new battery and a clean and reset of the Throttle position sensor as the vehicle automatically entered limp mode upon the codes manifesting. This is a full time Uber/Lyft vehicle with 153,984 Km/s on the dash. A month ago the dealership replaced the fuel pump on the vehicle which was covered under recall. This is now the first mechanical issue the vehicle has had, only did oil changes and basic tire/brake service. I am in Canada Ontario. Photos of the dash have been attached, and bellow is a quote from the dealership on the work needed:

INSPECTION REPORT:

2 CODES PRESENT IN ECU-P210900 THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR MIN PERFORMANCE

Are they actually making you pay for a new water pump @ $927.67 parts+labor cost only one month after replacing the original one under recall?

#3 ·
Due to the high milage on the vehicle it exceeded warranty claims. Nothing is covered under warranty. I never said they replaced the water pump under recall, I said they replaced the fuel pump under recall 1 month ago. Those are 2 different things. Yes, I have to pay for everything. I'm just shocked that a water pump died on a 2019 Hatchback so soon, despite it being a full time driveshare vehicle with 154,000 Kms on it. It's odd that it just died like that. Toyota Reliability isn't what it used to be.

Do you have a record of the last coolant change. Do you recall coolant level approximately sometime before the incident? I’m curious to know how it happened and if I need to be more cautious of any signs to look for or probable preventative maintenance for my customers.
Hope all goes well with your ride.
Thanks.

The coolant has never been changed. I don't recall the levels, but I do know for a fact that no coolant has ever leaked out (not even a drop) or any other fluid.

Did you inspect the battery (in the picture) on the side of the road when it all happened? Because it almost seems like the battery had issues especially if it’s reading 10v~ it will have trouble driving the water pump. If the battery is that low when running, the alternator isn’t giving 12-14v average. Which means there could be alternator to battery issue as well.

I did not inspect the battery, but I had a good idea that the battery will need to be replaced. During the pandemic if the vehicle wasn't driven for 2 days or longer it wouldn't start due to battery being drained fully. I have a dash cam that is always running and picks up motion detection, so it records even when the vehicle is off. This drains the battery. Not surprised the battery needs to be replaced. Only shocked that the water pump is toast. :/

If that stops/start the engine when not in motion. Disable it if you can. I'd never buy one that did tha exclusively and its very hard on the electrical system.

that reliability is extremely bad. Without warranty I'd go to and independant shop for the work and repairs. Some may not need even doing as mentioned. Alternator could be an issue and the water pump won't run or burns out at low voltage.

The worst thing is they have no water pumps anywhere in Canada, and could take 7-10 business days to get one in from the US! This is truly disappointing and unacceptable. Each day the vehicle isn't on the road costs me $$$. The dealership working on it is trying to (possibly) get it sooner, fingers crossed. I'll have a better idea on the ETA tomorrow by 10am.

#17 ·
LOL, little over a year ago. My AC compressor quit. It was 14 weeks before the vehicle was repaired. No parts to be had!!! If its not apart talk to some garages they my have other sources. the Dealer will ONLY order direct from Toyota and knowhere else!!

#18 ·
I don't want aftermarket parts only original OEM Toyota Parts so I'm obligated to avoid other garages.. But they should have these parts in the country I mean seriously 7-10 business days is pathetic. I expect more from Toyota, now they are literally costing me $. Not happy about that at all! Seems like we should order new parts ahead of time that we think will need to be replaced and keep them in our own garage. Customers shouldn't feel like that's what they need to do!! Each day I'm off the road is income I could have earned.

If another dealer or location has it they won't approach them. You can I suppose do so. Remember the eta is a Guestimate. Odds are longer than that and will be updated when it doesn't show up.

#20 ·
I called 4 other dealerships in surrounding cities and all say the same thing. Coming from the same place, same ETA. SMH - I'm beyond pissed-off. 😤

#22 ·
This is a falsity of sorts because of laws of physics. It takes x watts to drive the pump, be it mechanical or electrical. It takes more to convert to electrical and back to mechanical.

It does save very minute levels of MPG in cool environment or lab testing because then it doesnt have to run every second. But many aspects of modern car design are inferior because it has to look good on paper and in a lab environment, even if not viable in real world.

#29 ·
True that! My coworkers GTI blew the turbo within first two years under 30K and he didn't drive it hard whatsoever...

#52 ·
Unfortunately they don't ship outside of the US. Was hoping to place an order and pay for overnight shipping but that's a no go to Canada. Good looking out though, thanks!

So it'd be good to replace coolant and water pump every 75,000 miles (120,700 km) as preventative maintenance... At 95,681 miles, OP almost made it to the 100,000 mile/10 year recommended coolant replacement.
I was about to make the same similar suggestion, reading all the posts. Non-commercial user 10yr/100k mile. Commercial vehicle should probably go a little sooner, say 8yr/85k mile.

$191.50/100k miles = $0.001915/mile. Relatively cheap PM (Preventative Maintenance) for non-commercial.
$191.50/85k miles = $0.002252/mile. Still cheap PM for commercial; less than one cent a mile.

#51 ·
Nah, I don't replace a part unless it is broken... Fluids are a different story, those I replace on recommended intervals...

#53 ·
Something worth noting: I called 4 different dealerships to inquire about price for water pump and labor. One dealership was asking $90 more for the pump and one asked for 4hrs labor, one for 3 hrs labor and another 2.1hrs. I ended up asking my service advisor to match the best price and he managed to do that for me after having his manager approve it. Be sure to call around, they make up whatever prices they desire for both parts and labor. Don't be a chump and just accept what ONE dealership tells you. They will try to milk every penny out of you if you let them. Be wise.

Just received an update from my service advisor saying the ETA for the water pump is May 5th, but could possibly change to earlier. I'm losing my mind - everything I knew about "toyota reliability" just got flushed down the toilet. A customer shouldn't have to wait this long to have their vehicle repaired. Unbelievable!!

The reason I purchased a brand new toyota is literally to avoid being in this exact situation. The irony is real.

Assumed the car has been rock solid so far? Higher percentage of less problems w/ the Corolla than the VW Golf R that you had contemplated.

As people have pointed out, elec water pumps are the growing trend.

Does the Corolla have a “normal’ and “severe” Maintenance Schedule?

If the repair has not yet been done, and you are a Costco member or have family/friend who is member, you can get a parts and service discount coupon. I assume thisnis also available for Costco CAN members.

#62 ·
I have a Costco membership but as far as I am aware they only offer tire service. I get tires from them. My best bet is to ride this storm out and rely on the dealership to get this done. No one should ever have to wait this long for a repair. If they can sell these cars they can stock the parts to repair them as well! They claim the water pump is a special order that you have to pre-pay ahead of time to receive.. My dealership ordered it for me as I towed the vehicle and left it there for them to fix it. They know what parts fail on cars, and what they should keep in stock. A lot of car rental companies and rideshare drivers will be facing this soon enough. To not have a single water pump in the country is pathetic. No one should be making excuses for them and kissing Toyota's ass! I'm losing $ each day I'm off the road so now by the time my vehicle is repaired I'm out twice what it'd cost for the repair. This is complete BS!! #NotHappy #WhereIsTheToyotaReliability :(

#63 ·
Ask for Toyota dealer or Customer Care to put in a rental car at their expense. The part should be stocked or readily available, despite being so new. Emphasize your story: 1st Toyota and NEW, for famed ”reliability,” unlikely to get another Toyota again given your current experience. Rental car at their expense will make the current situation tolerable.

Sorry to hear Costco CAN doesn’t have the same parts & service discount prgm. Tell Costco that Canucks want the same thing too! Canucks aren’t 2nd class citizens, and CAN isn’t a 2nd/3rd world Country.

#67 ·
7-10 day repair time is UNACCEPTABLE, esp for a simple repair (Water pump).

Toyota's failure to have that part available is BAD.

A last resort option would be to pull the identical waterpump off a NEW car and install it. I have heard of RARE cases where a dealer might do this. The part is still "new" just not out of a cardboard box new.

Hmm, if you continue to do such crazy high mileage is such a short time frame, the normal maintenance schedule does NOT apply to you. Things should done much sooner.

#68 ·
No one at Toyota cares. Literally NO ONE. They use Covid 19 as an excuse for everything but as long as they are "polite" about said excuse they feel as if they fixed my vehicle yesterday and all is good. Everyone preaches Toyota's reliability until stuff like what I am dealing with happens. The question is will they actually learn from this? I highly doubt it. The odds of them resolving this professionally are as likely as me buying another Toyota in the future. #Facts.

All big companies (Toyota, Honda, Ford, GM, etc) don't care. They all say they CARE, but talk is cheap: We (the company) care about our customers .......

You as the consumer can only make noise by complaining: to dealership general manager, dealership service mamager, Toyota Customer (don't) Care, negative reviews on Googlemaps, Yelp, FakeBook, tweets, Instagram, etc.

Your local County/Province may have the equivalent of a BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) that takes consumer complaints and investigates it with the auto repair place. No business wants to be dealing w/ a government agency, esp one that has teeth. This will be an annoyance for the dealership for sure. But the dealership will know you at least follow through w/ actions.

As a consumer, you can only vote w/ your wallet. Since you have time, consider writing everything you have done: spoken w/ Service Mgr, General Mgr, Toy Cust Care, NEGATIVE reviews on Googlemaps/Yelp/FakeBook/etc, to let Toyota Customer Care know they have made an enemy out of you. You will only yell people NOT to get a Toyota based on your experience. They will likely do nothing, but you put them on notice, which might help the next person who has bad experience with a Toyota or that same dealer.
