2020 Corolla LE steering issue

Hi all,

I'm a first time Corolla owner. Just bought a 2020 Corolla with 26k miles on it. I noticed that the steering wheel gets "light" at speeds above 55 to where I feel like I don't have control of the car. Like if I swerve to avoid something or if I change lanes quickly it takes it too long for the steering wheel to straighten back to the normal 6 o'clock position. Is that a normal thing with the Corolla?
Thank you in advance

I believe that is normal behavior, as other people who own the 2020 Corollas also complain of a similar "light / feathery" feeling. Don't take my word completely though, because I haven't driven a 2020 yet.

The Corolla is not known to be a high performance car and the steering may not give the drivers the best feel, but it is nowhere near "... feel like I don't have control of the car...". The new 12 gen are actually better than the last few gen's of Corolla. The way you described it is just scary. That is not normal. Was the car in an accident before? Have you checked the tires and make sure the pressure is at the correct level? Another possibility may be the alignment is off. Yes, would be best for you to have it checked out.

Maybe I overstated the issue. Another member described it perfectly the steering wheel feels "light and feathery". I took it to Firestone and they said it was fine. I'm taking it to the dealer Monday to be sure. My other vehicle is an MDX and the steering wheel is a lot "heavier" so I may be just used to that feel. Thanks

Normal. I’m a Toyota mechanic and the reason for this is because of the electric power steering so since it is electric it doesn’t feel the same as a hydraulic steering system would especially at high speed like that. Personally I’m not a fan of it. The reason it’s slower to respond afterwards is because it works with the computer instead of a belt and pulley.

I don’t like it either and had I known when I purchased it, I wouldn’t have! I’m considering upgrading my sway bars and adding a suspension brace to try and help improve the stability and handling/responsiveness. The steering feels delayed and lazy and considering I typically do 100mph on R71 (speed limit is 85) it’s very noticeable. Down here in texas it is often windy and the car is all over the road and when any large vehicle passes me or I pass them the car starts veering off its trajectory. I just don’t get why everything has to be electric. I wasn’t a fan when they moved to electric accelerators, I’m not a fan of CVTs and I don’t like this electric steering. It all makes the driving experience seem delayed and disconnected.

steering feel is very subjective. the steering is deliberately damped at highway speeds to make it harder to over-correct. in some luxury cars it is damped at low speeds too to lessen the feeling of the road.
personally I like to feel the road, but I recently saw somebody elsewhere concerned that they could feel the steering wheel shake when they hit a bump as though that was a problem.
When driving my Sequoia I appreciate the feedback it gives with it's hydraulic system, but I sure wasn't appreciating the complexity of the system when I had to replace the steering rack bushings.
Electric power steering is simple, compact, efficient, and reliable. it is also somehow dead silent, and it still amazes me that they are able to pull that off.

Sounds like you hydroplaned your front wheels.
