Which one do you prefer? Is the 2023 backwards compatible with older models and vice versa?

I like the broken up LED of the older one. It looks better to me. But the 2023 style is not bad either. As for compatibility. It's hard to tell. But the 2023 headlights look narrower at the grill and bumper part.

I'm not a fan of the claw-shape front headlight housing design in general, or the exaggerated, overstyled look of it (which is common on newer designs these days). It looks pretty awful from certain angles IMO, & was one of the things I liked the least about my 2020 SE sedan. The taillight housings also had a somewhat cheap/budget look to them (Same with the new Corolla Cross). Toyota could have done a lot better on both.

My older-school 2015 Yaris SE had better looking headlights & taillights (IMO) & that was even with the US version front/back light housings being less-spectacular than the European/Asian market version Yaris (which happens a lot for some reason when comparing North American version vehicles to other-market siblings). But, as with everything subjective, "Eye of the Beholder" I suppose.

I’m biased, but I genuinely prefer the older “J” design headlights. The combination of that headlight design, and the LED strip below makes for a very cool and unique look.

The newer design is attractive also, but comes off as a little more cost cutting to me.

While i have to agree it looks stupid - if i had to guess maybe its a way to make the signal more noticeable in a situation such as when the headlights are shining bright at night, the signals might get washed out by the bright leds causing more of a potential hazard.

..or they just did it to look cool which obviously backfired.

Is that the lever on the left side and you switch to "DRL off"???
I will have to check the manual. I cannot tell if the DRL's are on. At least there is a switch to shut down all lights. I do have trouble engaging the fog lights because there are two settings for the headlights. i am not even sure what the DRL' look like. The fogs are so tiny and I believe it is that top switch to turn on but the headlight switch must be in a certain position for those fogs to work. At least I know how to shut off everything. There is also an "A" on the lower left corner next to the dash illimination dial. Is that for auto highbeams? o_O

The IIHS rates the 2022 non-adaptive headlights as "mediocre", and the 2023 as "good". Regardless of aesthetics, and being firmly in the "old guy" phase of my life, I prefer lights that help me see better. So I'd prefer the 2023+ design. Alas my 2020 SE has "mediocre" headlights with the J-LEDs which I consider totally useless given that the main beams are also the DRLs. I've helped them a bit by aiming them very slightly higher. Even stock they're better than the halogens on our Golf Sportwagen.
