I just bought a 86 with the 22re. I replaced the air meter with a used one the old one was stuck. Ialso did plugs wires cap and rotor. the motor does not want to idle when cold. but seems fine when it warms up. it does have some holes in the intake rubber elbow but I wrapped the whole thing with black tape until the new one arrives. it has 136k on the motor but has been in the mud. also when it warms up it does not seem to have much power. I would like to set the base timing and the throttle position sensor voltage. I dont know what base timing is on this or how to set up the tps voltage. I paid 500.00 for it and have about 750 in it now with the used air meter 2 cv axles tune up stuff and tie rod ends. oh yea its an automatic

Timing is 5* BTDC with the T and E1 terminals of the diagnostic connector shorted together.
Idle is 750 rpm.
If you Search you can find detailed how-to's for adjusting the TPS.

Since your idle problem is when cold, could be a problem with the Cold Start injector system.

ok I found a vacume hose at the very back of the intake was off. I started it up and put my finger over the hose and the pipe it hooks to and felt no vacume ,so I ck the pipe is clogged up with carbon.so I stick wire in there and carb cleaner.I dont know what it controls but its at the very back of the intake and its a pipe that sticks straight up just below the intake. anyway now it starts up and idles smooth but is still down on power.

well i did a compression test 120 in the front 2 cylinders and 90 in the third and 60 in the back cyl. pulled the valve cover to adjust valves, and the timing chain is so loose you can turn the crank probably 30 degrees back and forth before the cam moves. so I took it to a big clay mud hole and rooted the f**k out of it. man this thing is impressive. for such a weak motor it sure does fine in 4 low. with 33/12.50/15 bfg mud radials. now the motor seems to run much better, but now the trans slips in low gear if you get on it hard. this is turning into a money pit fast but what else is new. also I installed a rough country 4/5 inch lift kit to clear tires
