I've been working pretty hard with Turbokits.com about a turbo kit for our 10th gen with the 2ZR-FE 1.8L engine. They were not aware of how similar the engine is with the 1zz from the 9th Gen Corolla that they already have a kit for. I think with some time they will be able to get this done for us. I've been telling them about the interest & I'm sure that some Scion xD people would be interested too.

So what are everyones thoughts? I would really like to see everyone drop them an email about your interest so that they can see the desire. They have pointed out to me that it may be a while since they would put a lot of R&D into it before they would sell it with their name on it. Doesn't an extra 50-70 hp sound sweet? Take a minute an send an email to them!

The kit would be made so that the stock internals would work fine with the engine management system for the kit. This isn't for max power but some extra very usable power. The Corolla handles great with a few simple mods so the extra power would be great. I've been sending pics to them & they are excited that the 1ZZ & 2ZR are so similar. This could make getting the kit together much quicker. :D

I would personally like to thank you Supercharged MR2 for taking the initiative to get progress made on this. DOn't forget to mention in addition to the Rolla and xD there is the Matrix and VIbe (which I am)

Also you have inspired me to get some action in the strut department which are the major brands that I should contact to try and get results?

Thanks again

I will pass that on to them. Don't forget to thank the post too! ;)

Turbo sounds like a good idea.. Do you know what they estimate the price to be?
Around $3195 complete with engine management.

Sent an e-mail last May 12, 2011. Received a reply the next day. Here's what they said...

"We have thought about releasing a kit for the latest version of the car, however, we need to make sure the demand for a kit is high enough. There are 2-3 projects we need to finish before we consider starting the R&D of a new kit. If a system gets put in the works, we will surely update the forums and the site. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for contacting us!"

Hopefully, this will push through.
Similar to the response I got. They told me to follow up which I did & this time I'm making great progress. :D

A turbo kit for the 2ZR-FE engine sounds nice, but a supercharger sounds much better.
I would prefer the turbo, more flexible for power desires while still allowing excellent MPG when off the boost.

Here is an update from today. They are very excited that the 1zz is so similar to the 2ZR. They believe that this could make it much easier to get this turbo kit ready. The pictures I sent them were a big help seeing how the 2 engines are laid out the same.

The kit should be good for 90+ HP at the wheels with stock internals running 8-9 psi. That would put us in the 220+ WHP which would make our Corollas very fun to drive.

I would just like everyone to drop them a separate email showing the interest in this product so they can see they desire for it. For $3195 for a complete plug & play turbo kit this would be a great deal. When I bought my "S" the "XRS" was $3k more than my "S" so this could be fantastic! :naughty:

I'll continue to keep everyone updated. :D

Update on today's information.

I've been able to confirm that the 440cc fuel injectors from the 9th gen turbo kit will plug into our 10th gen. The next part is confirming some connections for the engine management to the ECU. I was also told to check into our car being DBW so I sent them an email today asking about that.

Just talking about this gets me excited!

weird i never realized the 9th gen was DBC even though i had one. haha guess i wasnt paying too much attention back then. but now that i think of it my grandmas felt pretty responsive, no DBW lagging crap. yay throttle controller.

aw man 220 would be sooooooo niceeeee!!!!!!!
ill save up money for that!!!!!

Update

Another update for everyone. I was able to verify that the ECU is different for the 1ZZ & our 2ZR. The bad news is that the harness for the 1ZZ kit won't just plug in to the factory harness. The good news is that it could still be wired in. I asked them how hard it would be to make a plug in harness for our 2ZR. Just waiting for a response! :D

i think the amount of gain in power definitely outweighs the decrease in MPG.
as long as it doesnt turn the car into a 15mpg compact racer haha
That's the beauty of a turbo, if driven easy than MPG will change very little but put your foot down & you have the power when you want it!

I got a little hope for a possible group buy if we could get 10+ interested people. This could happen much quicker with some interested owners of the 2ZR. We need to reach out to other forums that share the 2ZR-FE 1.8L engine such as Scion xD, Pontiac Vibe, Matrix. I would think we could find 10+ people that would jump at this. It's not a bad price as far as a $$$/HP ratio.

I'm in so we only need 9 more people!

The problem with that is so many people can say that their in, but when it comes time who will actually fork over the 3 grand to do it.
I think most people that say yes are going to start saving and when its done not have the $$$

A turbo is technically "free" horsepower (excluding the extra gas). It uses wasted energy from the exhaust to create boost, so driving down the road costs nothing until you spool it up. Best bang for the buck there is..and you control it all with your foot.

I am interested, but I find those RWHP or should we say FWHP numbers a little suspect. I really do not know what the bottom ends of the engine are made of (forged pistons, forged rods?), but creating 90 hp without some other modifications on an engine not designed for a turbo sounds a bit pie-in-the-sky. The compression ration is 10:1. I know you can control some of this with the VVT-i by increasing the time you hold the valves open, but that would reduce hp. You can also start retarding your timing to stop any knocking from the boost, but again, that would reduce hp. Have you seen these numbers on a 9th generation as in dyno results? I would be happy with a realistic 50hp as long as it is dependable.

I was hoping for 50 HP too but the kit is more than able to produce 90 HP with stock internals without issue. The key is the engine management & tune. If you want to only tune it for 50 hp than do so. The 440cc fuel injectors can handle close to 300 hp & since I'm not interested in anything close to that I'll be fine. If I can manage 200 hp I'll be more than happy. It would make the car even more fun & still give me great mpg when I'm just cruising. :D

Not necessarily, there are lots of turbo cars/crossovers on the world that are autos...now the concern might be if the auto trans can take the added power...the Gen 9 Xrs wasn't offered in an auto..this might be the reason....

If you tuned it for a little lower hp & kept from going crazy from a dead start your AT should be okay. Change the fluid more often will also help & run a transmission fluid cooler too.
