Hi,

I'm a total noob with these engines. Can some one tell me what is the visual different between the 2 engines except the turbo ? The reason i asked is what if someone sell me a car with 5sfte or a 5sfe with turbo or 3s head on 5s block and claims it 3sgte?

Also does the 5sfe bolt right on the 3sgte tranny?

Where is the engine code located in these engines?

I'm assuming you are talking about 2nd gen 3sgte.

The head is very obvious.
Look at the valve cover and the location of oil filler.
3S oil filler is at a corner.
5S oil filler is right on the second cylinder.

For the block, one sure way is to look at the oil cooler. (between oil filter and engine block)
3S block has oil cooler bracket that is mounted on the block with 4 bolts.
5S block doesn't have the bracket. The oil cooler is mounted directly on the block.
If you see 2 coolant tubes coming off the oil cooler at 3 and 4 o'clock, it's a 5S block.

Yes, it's the first gen 3sgte. Most likely, it is a 3SGTE.
Alltrac community is small, if someone got an ST165 with 5S bottom end for sale, we probably know.

By the way, in case of 5S block with 3S head swap, you won't be able to tell from the valve cover or timing belt cover which block the engine has. You need to look at the oil cooler.

Reason i asked is the engine was rebuilt and bored to 2.2l. So it can be the 5s block with 3s head. The engine was blown so the owner rebuilt it. Moreover, it has twin entry turbo and manifold. What is the advantage of that?

Where is this car located?

3S can be made to 2.2L by stroker kit.
Did he tell you that he has 5S block?
Or did he use stroker kit to increase the displacement to 2.2L?

There are two possibilities on the turbo,
1. The owner has upgraded it to 2nd generation turbo/manifold. The first gen came with single entry turbo. The twin-entry spools faster. This is a good thing. You have more choice of upgrade turbos that can be bolt on the twin-entry manifold.
2. The owner has swapped 2nd gen 3SGTE in there. This is even better. There are more upgrade stuff for 2nd gen than 1st gen engine.

Look at the intake manifold (not intercooler). If it says "Toyota 2000 Twin Cam 16", it is a 2nd gen intake manifold. Chance is that the whole engine is 2nd generation.

This is 1st gen engine (notice the intake manifold)

Oh shoot!!! i think its 2nd gen. I gotta go back and check the car again. Its stupid that i didnt know about these engine prior of checking the car.

He said its:

2.2L (bored to 87MM with 91MM stroke)
twin entry turbo (minimal shaft play) and twin entry exhaust manifold
custom 2.5 downpipe
2.5" exhaust back to the stock muffler (never got to change it)
MR2 BOV (recirculated)
high flow oil pump

He said when he got the car the engine was blown, so he rebuilt it. What do you think i should check? Please help...

Thanks
ps. when i checked the car, i looked closely to the turbo manifold. It goes as cycl 1+3 and cycl2+4
