Do 4 cylinders have shorter engine life then v8 or v6 becasue of the increased rpms???? I hear this alot but usually from old people.

Depends on how they are driven and maintained........

Call up Jamie and Adam....... We can bust this myth......

I've had two that have gone well over 300K - one looks like it might make it to 400K. I no longer own them, but still see them on the road from time-to-time.

In my opinion, a 4 cyl will last as long as any cyl configuration.

It's all about frequency of maint and driving sanely.

I think there must be some truth to V8 engines lasting the longest and being able to take the most abuse.

To begin with, there must be a reason why practically all taxis and police vehicles are V8-powered. No, it's not for performance cuz Ford Crown Victorias use a 4.6L V8 dating back like 20 years which produces just over 200hp only in a 4000lb car.

And then there was this Mythbuster episode where they tried to kill a V8-powered car by pumping in all sorts of odd "fuels". It was very hard to kill from what I recall.

this might have been true a long time ago when 4 cylinder engines were less efficient.

toyota I-4's deliver torque at very low rpms. That's what vvt-i is all about. My 4 banger camry gets up to 160 km/hr at under 3000rpm. With a toyota the engine is probably the last thing you need to worry about.

in my family we have a few 3rz's one well over 400k when we sold it and it still had plenty of power(all stockmotor and tranny still had tha factory seal on the valve cover) antoher white one sold with about 270k still pass it everyday and that was 2 years ago. mine had 237k daily driven. and another one sold at 300k when the stock clutch let out. all motors were untouched.

now my dads silverado w/350 let go at 150k, and at 250k i think it is on it way again.

but that is just the proof i have.

I agree with what njerald said... it all depends on how well it's maintained and driven. Poor maintance (never getting oil changes, running with low oil, not replacing fuel filter, spark plugs, etc) and harsh driving adds up. An old lady with an 2008 V8 Tundra is bound to last a hell of a lot longer than a teenager with an 08 Corolla who thinks he's the shit, high revving, neutral dropping (if its an auto), etc.

i think its a myth
my grandpa had an 86 camry LE for years and years that did 275k on just basic maintenence....the sucker is still running (although not in his possession, he has a 2001 XLE V6 now) with well over 300k on it
its all about maintenence and how the car is driven...im a firm believe in treating my cars as best as i possibly can, as it will return the favor.

Talk about mythbusters, here is a myth i will bust right now! I have worked with the Crown Vics for a decade, i would take a 4 cylinder camry engine over one of them any day as it is twice as durable and ten times more reliable.
The Crown Vic V-8 is powerful enough but begins to fall apart at any point after 50,000 miles no matter how it is maintained. At which point they also begin to use oil, lots of it.

The only reason taxi, police and other large fleets use it is because of Ford's generous fleet discounts. And this is one of the few things keeping Ford alive as they make up the discounts on parts sales later. So any theory of V-8 durability, at least when it pertains to Fords, is again a myth, at least in my long experience with Ford V-8 engines.

If your talking about toyotas then I would say the opposite is true. The 4 cylinders seem to take much more of beating and still keep going as opposed to the v-6s. In fact I dont think ive ever replaced a 4 cyl, but ive done a whole lot of the v-6s. In general though it really depends on the build quality and maintenance as others have said. Certain companies make certain engines better than others. The stock v-8 in the crown vic is damn near industructable just like the toyota 4 cylinders. Ive seen both of them with well over 200K miles on them and still running strong.

Watch what you say about the mighty crown vic. The crown vic police use is called a "Police Interceptor" They come standard with hopped up mustang gt engines with true dual exhaust. It has more power than your standard crown vic. But the main reason police drive vics is because the are large and very safe. Their suspensions can take more abuse than a camry can. They jump curves at high speeds, cross medians in hwys, etc. try stuff like that in a camry and something is going to break.

yea, and too bad the crown vics gass tank breaks and explodes on a rear impact...

You are right, I edited my previous post. I forgot that the newest design wasnt to move the tank, But rather to add a "Protective shield"

my 2002 camry has 190k on it now. runs fine, many american cars dont make it to this mileage without having to spend a lot of money on engine repairs. Lucky to say, i havent spent much. But my dad is also a mechanic, so we take care of our baby. even tho I do drive it crazy. so theres your answer for the myth. TOyota and honda engines= 300k miles!

that's very possible as you can keep any engine running by throwing money at it. The Crown vic engine, if babied and well maintained can go 200,000 without having the head or pan off but a) you are going to be forced to replace lots of parts anytime after 100,000 to get it that far and b) the car will most likely be burning oil and/or ready for a valve job. Whereas the toyota engine is more like to still have strong compression and to be using little or no oil...
i dont need no stinkin Fords give me a toyota anyday (and doesnt toyota make a truck V8 anyway?)

I kid you not... I was at Pep Boys browsing for stuff recently, and this lady comes in. "What wrong with my car? Its making weird noises and won't go when I step on it," she says. The person at the desk asks her the make/model & takes her keys and pulls her car into the bay. A couple minutes later he asks:
Ma'am whens the last time you had your oil changed?" She responds, "You have to change your oil?" It was a 90s corolla...

You wouldn't believe how often that happens...
