Have a 99 camry 2.2 and the cgeck engine light came on and i reseted it and hasnt come on since the pas 4 or 5 months. I forgot what thw code was for. Something with bank 1 or 2 and maybe a bad cat converter. My question is i gotta smog this car in April of next yr. Will the code pop up cause it is stored? Just thinking of getting it smogged 90 days before the due date on the reg and its a no pass no pay place if it fails smog here in ca. I have no problem on fixing it but if the light hasn't come back on. I replaced both o2 sensors at 100k now it had almost 170k. Thanks

California has different laws (and too many laws, but that's another discussion), so I'm not sure what all of its requirements are, but you should check with a scanner to see if all the monitors are complete or if they are still pending. If they are still pending, then you might not be able to pass your CA smog test. If you have no check engine light code and all the monitors are complete, you should not have a problem.

The county in TX in which I live has no smog check. Only a safety inspection is required. You do have to have all the correct equipment, like a CAT and all your components, but that's it. You can even have the check engine light on and it will still pass the safety inspection. Other counties (usually the densely populated, more liberal areas) do have the smog test. Glad I don't live there.

TX looks a little more complicated than you indicate - especially about the CEL light being on.

The reason those "liberal" densely populated areas have emissions tests is - wait for it - they're more densely populated. You should thank "liberals" for your clean air. Looks like China could also use a few more "liberals".

California needs higher standards because of climate and the mountains trap pollutants in the valley - and it's densely populated. Anchorage AK (only 250k) has the same topography and has strict emissions testing.

Maybe all you "liberal" haters should visit a children's and elderly ward where they treat respiratory problems.

do as john sez. get an obdii reader and verify there are no pending or set codes and that all 7 systems are good including the catalyst and the evap, which are the 2 hardest to make go green after an ecu reset/battery disconnect.
you can get a reader on ebay for 5 bucks btw.
