I've found the reason for the ticking sound. My dealer kept saying "normal" and "there are leaves in the fan". I kept telling them otherwise until I got pissed enough to just take apart the blower fan and see where EXACTLY the sound was coming from. The sound is coming from the metal faceplace which covers the wire spool around the spindle of the fan. the faceplace must be balanced properly because it holds in place the spindle which is rotating for the fan to blow. when the faceplace is off balance by one of two screws that holds it in place, the fan ticks like a MF'er....as you balance the plate, the tick goes away and is as quiet as a mouse.

#1 I took my glove box completely off making sure to release the springy thing first on the right side towards the passenger door and then just popped her out.

#2 I then got out my trusty ratchet with a 5.5mm socket and removed 3 screws on the underside of the blower....the fan will slide out easily. leave the wires attached (be careful as the fan is still runnin' lectric)

#3 let down the door that holds the cabin filter in and remove filter. now you can reach up in there and see if any of those mysterious leaves are present. blow it out with your air compressor or just root your hand around in there to get anything out.

#4 hold the black plastic fan housing in your hand carefully and reach over and turn your a/c on the low setting (BE CAREFUL as that thing is quick to get away from you and can take a nub off pretty quickly) make sure you can hear the sound coming from the assembly in your hand. If so, move to step #5.

#5 remove the covering with a phillips screwdriver (4 screws - i think) and remove that cover to reveal a silver metal cover with TWO (2) lubed screws. THESE ARE THE SCREWS THAT MUST BE BALANCED. Take a pair of vice grips and grab the black housing with them so you can get your hands away from the moving fan and so you can hold it steady. then use your phillips screwdriver on one of the two screws and notice how you can make the sound/tick worse as you tighten one of the screws.....too tight and the fan slows down and/or TICKS, too loose and the fan slows down....(spindle getting in a bind).

There is a point where the fan will turn fastest and the sound will disappear magically. You'll see what I'm talking about once you're in there adjusting the screws to find that perfect point.

#6 re-assemble and enjoy!

I hope this helps a few people that have this ANNOYING sound!

sometimes it just takes getting pissed off.....damn delphi.

Why didn't they have metal stoppers under those screws or not have the spindle held still by a moveable plate......argh....

I think that over time, those screws are backing out at different rates, which makes the spindle bind up and/or ticking sound occur......
Great post. A couple of things to mention:
1) 5.5mm is about 50 microns off of 7/32".
2) You have to disconnect and reconnect the wire harness to remove the plastic fan housing if you follow the instructions above. PITA... times two!
3) After removing the bell housing I realized that the last 2 screws above referred to as "lubed screws" actually have some sort of loctite or epoxy on them. Instead of adjusting those I backed up a step and reinstalled and adjusted the 4 screws which were holding the housing together. Just by tightening up the metal screws in the plastic housing I was able to get my ticking sound to go away!!! :D Therefore, no need to break the loctite seal for this go around.

Great post eyedoc!

I am experiencing a noise, from my ac too, not sure if I would call it a tick, but I know it is coming from the blower motor, I can only hear it on the lowest two settings. when I turn the blower off I can hear the noise slow down like errrrrrr......errrrr.....errr....er. Is this the same thing you guys were hearing? Because it is driving me f*ing nuts!

just made the dealer replace the blower fan under warranty....tick is GONE!!!

to all those saying it is normal, it is NOT. yea leafs might cause the sound, but my 05 didnt have a cabin filter and i believe that was the reason and origination of the tick. dirt got in there and messed w/ the bearings and hence the terrible ticking sound.

so for all those having the ticking sound, make your dealer replace the blower fan or pick one up at trdparts4u.com for about $100 and it will be gone!! it has to be an easy install too, cause they only charged 0.2 hours of labor for the install, which translates to 5min for any normal person!!

anyone know the "blower fan" part #?

Can't remember from past posts, but do you have an 05 without the air filter? Did you check for stuff in there? From your description it sounds like either something in there or maybe the fan is rubbing the plastic housing? The problem everyone else describes is a true "tick, tick, tick" not a rubbing sound. It may be worth dropping it and then running it while it's down and seeing what going on.

Not exactly a part number, but it is the best I could do...

No I have an 08'. Mine sounds more like a metal on metal rubbing when I turn it off. Like a bearing is going out somewhere. But when the fan is at low speed it sounds like a fast paced tick.

If you're still under warranty, take it in. There are many that had just the ticking and had them replaced under warranty. Sounds like yours may be worse.

I will have to do that. I am afraid that I will take it in and it won't do it for them, or they will claim to not be able to hear anything, or I will get the "its normal" run around. I plan on taking my truck in for a few other things(15-25 mph vibe TSB, and a vibe from the front differential) anyway so i guess I just need to find the time to do it.

^^^^ Thanks Doc! I did this today and cured my annoying tick!

^^^^ I tried this method first but it didn't work.

I didn't want to mess with the dealership quite yet so I pulled my motor and tried what eyedoc suggested...SILENCE!! It is so nice!!! I had to loosen one screw about a half a turn and the tick went away! Thanks again Eyedoc! If the tick comes back I will take it in then.

Also I couldn't believe the amount of crap in the cabin air filter after only a year of driving! Leaves, sticks, etc!

My truck is 33K and I hear this same noise! I have to let dealership deal with this next visit. tacomas are not that great anymore.

honestly, they'll say its normal........even thought we all know it isn't.

it's easy to fix....you'll just waste a lot of time waiting and a bunch of frustration and BS going to the stealership.

x2. Just do it yourself. It takes 10 minutes top. The dealer probably won't even know how to fix this anyway.
