I replaced a bad alternator recently on my 90 Tercel. After starting it up i noticed smoke coming from the new alternator. I loosened the belt somewhat which lessened the smoke but i found that the alternator is still getting really hot... Just wondering if anyone knows what might be causing this? Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

This could be one of several things

1 is fuse blown going to alternator from fuse box?

2 is battery extremly low on current?

3 is battery bad?

4 is battery terminals corroded?

5 wires at alternator plug raw?

6 is engine leaking oil on alternator?

7 did you over tighten wire to alternator?

8 does the pulley match the belt properly?

seeing that most of these point at the battery you may consider trying that first, even if you borrow a battery just to try from another car.

Almost sounds like the new alternator is bad. If it wasn't belt smoke I would guess its probably something shorted out in the alternator itself. Diodes or regulator maybe. Take it and get it tested.
