My 2002 Highlander V6 AWD with 75,000 miles is very slow to shift to overdrive when temps are below 32F. I live on a state highway, so if I start it cold then pull out and start driving 50-55 it will take 1.5 miles or so before it will shift into overdrive. I've done a fluid change in past 3000 miles with no change. I'm wondering if the coolant just has to be up to a certain temp before the computer will allow it to go into overdrive. What is the opinion of others? This is the first winter i've owned it. Bought it in August. Thanks.

BTW. no codes.

Can't remember on the 1st Gen, but on later models it is programmed to not use overdrive until it warms up to a certain temp. Probably the same on a 1st Gen. Been too long to remember when we had our '05 HL (and we don't pick up the '07 HL until the end of next month).

Yep, my 03, V6 AWD has done that from new. I can tell by when OD kicks in how cold it is. It's exactly 1 mile to the first stop sign from my driveway. It usually kicks in by then. Not this morning. It was well past the stop sign, maybe another mile.

It was -14 deg. F.
