What do you guys do during snow or ice storms? Do you pull the wiper blades up (away from the windshield) or do you leave them down?

We are expecting lots of snow here in the north east. I pulled the arms up..

On a side note, I am SO HAPPY that I have installed my Husky liners.. so happy..

Get a thin blanket or piece of tarp or drop cloth and cover your windshield. You can put the edges of the blanket under the doors, tackle the bottom edge under the hood and use a rope or a few large good magnets to hold the top edge. It will protect the windshield and wipers from ice and snow.

I live in Florida, so what do I know, but up looks bad..

I live in SoCal, I can't see myself going back and deal with ice and snow 3 months a year.

I grew up in snow & ice country, after I got my degree I moved to SoCal beach town. Here I get ream by high taxes and get beat up by Sacramento politics, but at lease I don't have to deal with the cold.

10:30 update: I just heard a potentially historic snow storm on its way to the Northeast regions, are any of you prepare for this?

I currently live in the area supposed to get the heaviest accumulation, just north of Boston, inland. The projection I last saw was 31.1" by the time it's done, falling at up to 4" per hour. All of the roads and public transportation are closed effective at midnight tonight...should be fun!

As an aside, I always leave them down. I see no reason to put them up, it doesn't make any difference to me. I pick them up off the windshield to clean the snow off anyways.

If I had to give you a poll of results though, I work in a company with about a 500-600 car parking lot and looking out the window, I'd estimate about 40% of wipers appear to be raised, and the rest lowered. Either the rest are lazy or agree with me

Funny, I just had this convo with some people at work today. I pulled into the parking lot this morning and saw some cars with theirs lifted, so I lifted mine and then asked them why they lifted theirs. They all said basically because that's what my parents used to do and told me to do when I was younger. Next time I won't lift mine, I can never get that 30 seconds of my life back...

@Blochead21 @cspaced25 - you guys don't be shy, send some of that snow down to us. I would love to have tomorrow off.

Down - but it depends a bit on the storm.

If you get a moderate amount of snow, up would keep them from freezing to the windshield. Down, you turn on the defroster and chip off the ice and pry them loose.

If you get a situation like Reply #8 , where typically you have rain freezing to the blades, up is bad, b/c they you have to carefully use something like a cigarette lighter or hair dryer off an inverter to melt the ice enough to lower the blades back down.

Bottom line is down works for any condition and up only works for snow but not an ice storm - apart from the spring wear.

I grew up in California and living in Texas, I still don't get a whole lot of snow education. Last winter, though I had a boss from Alaska tell me to leave the wipers up. We had an ice and a snowstorm last year (unusual), and it seemed to make it easier to clear the windshield and keep the ice from tearing up my blades.
