yea i would have to agree to just go ahead and take it to the dealer. The minute i finished reading this post, I called the Service Department of the Dealer I purchased my 09 Corolla from, and before I could even finish my story he knew what I was talking about. He then told me if I could have it at the dealer at 9am the following morning, then he could have it fixed....

So im taking it up there tomorrow....

anyone know how long this will take?

The TSB does not explain what causes it, and I've talked with a few people about what the ECU could be doing to cause oil consumption. The only real good things I can think of are to do with ignition timing (maybe -- seems unlikely) or some way the ECU is controlling the dual VVT-i setup.

Not sure. It's an odd one, that's for sure.

Is it possible the ECU monitors oil pressure or oil level and should trigger a trouble code to turn the check engine light on when the pressure/level gets too low? Maybe the ECU's firmware isnt properly set up to monitor this problem correctly. I dont know, it is still weird that the car is consuming that much oil...

My guess is that the re-flash has something to do with the cold start enrichment. Because of the amount of fuel it takes on a cold start, some people could be seeing the result of a rich cold mixture diluting the oil slightly, making it easier for a little to make it's way into the combustion chamber. I wouldn't think the ECU actually has any control of oil consumption, just control of something that causes a little extra consumption.

Excessive Oil Consumption, isn't that good news... I pick up my wife's new Corolla LE tomorrow so I called the service department at the dealership and they had not heard of this TSB, typical of this dealership's service Dept.

I explained that I was picking up a new Corolla tomorrow and wanted more info on this TSB and wanted my car looked at to ensure oil the consumption problem does not happen with it later on down the road. After a few seconds of clicking on a keyboard he said there was a TSB about excessive oil consumption. He was being evasive so I asked him if he could print it off and I would pick it up in a few minutes , on my way home from work. He said he couldn't do that since these bulletins are for dealers only. After much frustration I asked if the TSB noted a range of VINs that were affected or if there was a way to tell if my car was affected. He said no there was no VIN ranges noted and that only if the vehicle shows signs of oil consumption, you should bring it in under warranty and they would look at it.

This new Corolla car came off the Cambridge line a on the 8th Sep, just over a week ago so I sure hope they fixed the issue at the assembly plant and it doesn't haunt me in the near future.

I am very displeased with this service department, I have had dealings with them before with my wife's present Corolla and my 2003 4Runner. In fact from my standpoint they are very unhelpful. I will NEVER bring this new car or my 4Runner to them ever.

I live in Orleans, Ont and the dealer is extremely close to where I live.

yea dont bother asking them to be nice to you. best thing to do is to go in and just tell them you have an oil consumption problem. because they wont ask you if you do or not and if you dont mention it, then it has no problems. go in, and say something like "i checked my oil yesterday and it seems low can you guys check it out" thats all it takes for them to update your ECU because they know about the problem. like i said earlier, a customer with 1,400 miles was missing 1 quart of oil so it doesnt take long for the oil consumption to be noticed so they wont give you a hard time about it being low miles and you being paranoid.

Wholemilk,

Thanks for the heads up on the TSB. Good work in keeping us informed, please keep it up. We all appreciate inside information.

It seems that I am having a bad experience even before I take possesion of a new Corolla.

I am just angry(a kinder word for what I am thinking) that this dealer's service dept. tries to pretend that they know nothiing about this TSB and tries to give me the run around.

I have bought three vehicles from this dealer and this is the service I get? Anyway. I have several dealers to choose from in my area and will not be going back to these folks. I expect honesty and good service, I may be asking too much in this day and age but nonetheless that is my expectation from the dealership and I beleive that type of service is still avialbable somewhere. Am I naive?.

I will be very cautiously watching the oil consumption of this new car during the first month or so and I sincerely hope all is well.

Is this problem only for the VIN #s that start with 4.. aka Canada's shipment?

How would you know if you need to bring it in.. besides the checking the dipstick..

just wondering.. thanks!

I wasn't having any problems, I just called once i heard of this bulliten. I took mine in today, and it took them about 30 minutes..... According to them, everything was fine with mine and they said it was a good idea to bring it in and have it re-flashed and checked even though my car was not showing signs of the problem...

Could be some type of control for crankcase ventilation - not releasing pressure enough or at correct intervals causing too much pressure in crankcase causing oil blow by in cylinders??

Hm... Did my first oil change at 1k and second at 5k. I'm at about 9k now and showing a half quart low. It doesn't seem to be using oil quickly, but I really wouldn't expect it to be using any at this point. Guess I'll be heading to the dealer for a reflash.

Would be nice if the EPS and DBW throttle could also be tweaked via the ECU to be a little better.

Could we get manufacturing dates (month) of all those that have shown this oil consuption issue? Perhaps we can narrow this down a little.

Mine was made in July, and I show no consumption...but I am watching.

i work for toyota so i cant really tell you where you can print it. i got this from the toyota info network from my work. this isnt a recall, its a bulletin which means it applys to you only if it happens to you so that means no letter of notice from toyota. of course you can just say it happens and get an update. this is of course covered under warrenty (it IS an 09 :p )
Where can I print it? Please.

you cant print it, this bulletin is a resource for technicians not customers, you just have to go to the dealer and ask them for the ECU calibration update. as far as the VIN ranges goes the TSB doesn't even give VIN ranges so to me that seems like it applies to all corolla's and matrix equipped with the 1.8

hmmm this is all crazy to me because i just bought an S corolla 09 2 weeks ago i currently have 250 miles on it and i could SWARE when i drive i smell burning oil...i checked my oil levels and it doesnt seem to be low.....i am doing an oil change at 500 miles so i will see what is lost or what not. i am going to call the dealer tomorrow and see what they have to say about this because i am DEFINATELY NOT happy about hearing about all this and i thought i was crazy when i smelled burning oil after reading about it a lot of people have the same problem

its a brand new freaking car there should not be any problems especially with burning oil i think this is a joke. toyota is F'ing up.
