a friend of mine had the same problem with his 89..... when staring at my car we couldn't come up with a feasible solution. He had to pull the plate and drill a 4 (or 5) inch hole to reach inside and manually unlock it

 

Behind the license plate isn't a bad Idea, I am in the middle of an engine swap right now,and I was thinking about cutting a hole inbetween the engine and the trunk, but I think I like the license plate Idea better.

 

I ahve the same problem, I passed my finger in the hole of the key hole for the rear trunk.
By this hole you can reach a metal rod that when you pull on the side of the car will pop you trunk.

hard to explain but once you removed the key ketch in the back you'll understand.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, are you saying that when I find the rod I need to pull it towards the back of the car and then have someone pull on the release handle by the driver's seat? Or am I completely misunderstanding your idea.

 

when you find the rod pull it to the passenger side of the car.
The rod is between your key hole on the trunch and the latch that holds the trunk.
just put your finger in the hole where the key cylinder was and feel the small rod then grab it with your finger and pull on your right side.

forget about the drivers seat realse handle...once the key cylinder is removed this handle doesn't work anymore.

Don't think it's intended to be a fix. The OP can't get into his trunk at all and has to get it open before he can do anything about it.

I'm curious about how you would solve the problem of opening the trunk if this isn't it.

 

No luck in finding the rod yet, any suggestions?

 

punch out a taillight and you have access. No drilling, no water getting in, just a tail light.

Hell, punch out the pass side, i have a spare for sale. lol

Well, I got the trunk open today, I cut a hole behind the license plate and was able to reach up towards the lock cylinder and find (who'da thunk it) THE LOCK CYLINDER, so I pulled that to the right and the trunk popped open. Looking at the lock cylinder it looks like someone couldn't get it open, so they just took a great big screwdriver and a great big hammer and pounded on it until the screwdriver went it. Dumbasses.
