Back Up Cam Blurry

Hello, I just received my new 2015 Corolla S Plus. I really like the car, but when using the back up cam at night it is very poor. I had a 2011 Avalon and also a 2013 Prius and their cams work fine at night. I first checked to see if the lens was dirty but after cleaning it multiple times it is very clean. I saw in the search option someone with a 2014 Corolla installed bright LED license plate and back up lights to fix this. I would think Toyota would have updated this if it is a known issue from 2014? I think it's all kinds of wrong to have to go tearing apart your inner trunk liner yourself to upgrade bulbs from a parts store to make your factory cam work properly. Does anyone have a clear cam at night? Mine is substandard at best.

Today after work I went to a local audio shop, they install sound systems, remote starter and alarms and lighting kits. He hooked my up good. I got LED backup lights and license plate lights. I didnt get the brand, but the backup lights had lots of little bulbs in each assy. They were $29.95 for 2. The license plate LED's were $4.99 for 2, and only $15 to install. I decided to go with a better quality LED and not the cheap eBay option. I compared when he was installing, the LED's were hard to look at, so bright, but the factory bulbs looked dull yellowish. As soon as it gets dark I will take pics and post. Wish me luck!

Back of car
Before LED

After LED

I will go back to the shop and see if he has any brighter LED's today,,
Might not have helped solver your issues....but I must say those LED backups and license plate lights do look pretty slick compared to stock. Might have to invest in this on my own!

Also let us know if you have any luck w/ brighter LEDs!

Sounds like I have about the brightest bulb I can do without further mods. If I went bright enough to get the clarity I want with my cam I would probably melt some plastic, not an option. My other backup cams in Totota's have better clarity, I'm not sure why, possibly Toyota just went with a lower quality cam in the Corolla. I am very impressed with how my car looks at night with the LED's but not so much with cam clarity in the complete darkness.

I had a 3rd gen Prius a few years ago and yes the backup camera quality was much better than the one in the current Corolla.

I think it was just a cost cutting measure. They did bring the Corolla "up market" a bit without raising the price a whole bunch, so cuts had to be made in less noticeable places, and we don't spend a lot of time in reverse so my guess is they picked this camera and said "good enough!"

I love my Corolla but yes, the backup camera could be better :)

Man I am sorry about this I don't know why I didn't think about it earlier, probably because I haven't seen it in so long. Now I know this may not apply to Toyota but on Volvo's we were having a similar problem and the engineers traced it back to the connection(ie. wiring/interference problems for the camera. We ended up replacing that cable from the camera to the head unit.
I know that Land Rover also has the same problem and their techs hated it when ever they got one in because they had to replace the entire Interior harness of the vehicle.

I can't imagine Toyota doing a warranty repair. It's functional, it's just not very good. It would be like doing a warranty fix for excessive road noise or poor stereo speakers. It's an economy car - the quality of everything isn't going to be the best. It performs as designed. If it quit working all together, then it would be warrantied. I'm not crazy about it, but it does its job acceptably, barely
