My 97 toyota camry battery light comes on when I turn on the heater/defroster. 2 weeks ago the battery went dead. I took the car to Advance Auto and they put a tester on it and said the battery was good since it took a charge. I bought it back in and they checked to alternator while the car was running and it also checked fine. A week later, the battery went dead again. And again the battery took a charge and the alternator checked fine. I even put a voltmeter on the battery and checked it with the car off and then with it running. 12.3 volts off and between 14 and 15 volts when running. Now, the battery light comes on when I turn on the heater/defroster. It does it only while driving; not while the car is in idle. It's freezing cold in Indiana and I am afraid that the car will not start while my wife is out running errands (she drives this car). Has anyone out there experienced this problem? If so, I sure would appreciate a suggestion on how to sole it.?

From the symptoms, it seems more like an alternator problem. Maybe the brushes are worn, or something is dirty.

Does the alternator make any noise while the car is running? What if you give it some gas? Belt squeaking?

ace, get a cheap bulb tester at autozone and check all 6 cells of the battery to see if all the balls float like they're supposed to. if some don't float to the top, you've got one or more dead or weak cells and the battery needs to be replaced. this testing assumes none of the cells are low on distilled water and that the battery is charged as in using a battery charger left on overnight to fully charge the battery.

Yes, start with the alternator and cable connections. if the alternator checks out good, then check the cables. If the alternator is putting out enough juice, then it's not getting to the battery.

The brush assembly may need changing. $14.04+shipping:
