This is a perfect example of how Techstream would make this diagnosis much easier. You can pick up a cheap Chinese knockoff cable and software on ebay and amazon that will interface with a laptop and you will be able to do most everything a dealer tech can do. The cable is limited but it will do what you need.

 

Actually, the cheapest and easiest solution seems to be to get a third-party key remote system. I got a quote from a local outfit to install one with two key fobs for $150. I haven't seen any used parts available for my 2005 Avalon anyway and the dealer wants over $600 just for the receiver. Toyota's notes on this issue indicates that other parts might need to be replaced if this does not fix the problem and their parts are non-returnable.

So for an 11-year-old car I will go the cheap route.

I am just guessing it's the Body Module that went bad. It's the module that controls the remote controls.

If the key still starts the car, the Immobilzer is still working and it's a separate device.

As the other poster said, Techstream should provide diagnostics that would pinpoint the issue.

 

You are probably correct but the body module costs more than $600 and is unreturnable should the problem lie elsewhere. For the record, I found a dealer who installed a third-party system that does all that the Toyota key fob does. It cost $159, including installation & tax and has a lifetime warrantee. The module has been placed under the dash out of sight. So far, it seems to be working perfectly but perhaps does not have the same range as the original part--but still perfectly acceptable.

RANGE: If you know where the receiver/controller module is, look for
a longish wire un-connected to anything- there's your antenna.
Add a foot of wire to it, you could solder the extra on if you want,
then stretch the antenna (sideways is fine) to full length
You'll find your range is now *substantially* better:wink:

Both key fobs for opening doors on my 2005 Avalon stopped working at the same time. Trunk lid opener and alarm also do not work. Replaced the battery on one--still doesn't work. Tried to reprogram key fobs following instructions printed on several websites, including this one. The car does not enter programming mode (no clicks--opening/closing locks--after following sequence of key insertions and door opening/closing).

Doors open/close normally using key. Just the fobs don't work. Anyone else seen this problem? Might this be a bad fuse somewhere?

found one on eBay for Toyota solara and worked perfect just make sure Fcc number matches ,
part number i used OEM # 89741-AA030
after installation both old remotes programmed perfect .

if there's short then a new fuse should fix the problem. sounds like dealer's BS

Here's a test
Turn the car on engine on then off (body ecu will stay on for about 5 seconds while it has residual energy if the fuse is blown)

Quickly get out and use the lock function on the fob if it works your fuse is blown and in 1 min it will not be working anymore
If this is the case check the fuses in the driver's side fuse box

 

tried your test, key fob didn't work. Any other ideas?
