My alternator is bad and I'm trying to replace it, but the bottom bolt that runs all the way through the alternator won't budge. I'm using a 14mm box ended wrench and I can't for the life of me get the bolt to move (honestly don't even know which direction I should be turning it, down towards the front of the car or up towards the back). I've stripped the bolt a tiny bit and before I made it worse wanted to see what I can do to get this bolt off.

Welcome to the site Orion -

Lefty losey - turn the bolt head to its left to losen. Hit the bolt with some penetrating spray, wait a bit, then use a breaker bar to add torque. Your best bet is to use a 6 point socket instead of 12 point. 12 point can slip a bit and round off the shoulder.

This is exactly what I did last week when I replaced my alternator.

I'm late but spray the bolt on the opposite side with a lot of penetrating fluid and let it sit. Use a breaker bar and turn the bolt towards the back of the car (left to loosen). I broke that bolt on my car when I was replacing the alternator and I was lucky enough for the bolt to break in the alternator so that it could still come out. You may not be so lucky so make sure you proceed with caution.

Had the same problem. Wouldn't budge with a breaker bar. Didn't want to break the bolt or round its head so oaked it with penetrating fluid for two days, then put a Milwaukee Compact impact wrench on it. (y) If I had it to do over again I would consider removing the radiator hose for better access.

These bolts have tapered heads nominally 14mm but will strip if you use a socket. 2 ways out of it1. Use a six point socket, but you can get a 1/4 whitworth socket and bash it on the bolt head and undo it normally. When yo get the bolt out replace it wit a normal bolt , pu the old one in a vyse and haneer it sideways until id comes off.
