Boxed Frame More Rust Resistant?

There is no doubt about it, all body-on-frame vehicles, and in particular the 4Runner, suffer from severe frame rust/degradation issues in the "Rust Belt." Question, now that it will probably transition to a fully-boxed frame as the Tundra did, would this make it more rust-resistant, or less? Corrosive salt water would certainly make it's way into the interior of a boxed frame. It just seems to me that thorough treatment/coating of the rust-vulnerable frame would be the key, and to this end it would seem Toyota dropped the ball with the 4Runner. I recently viewed a video where the owner of a new 4Runner spent many hours meticulously undercoating prior to putting it on the road. One thing for sure, applying undercoating to the interior of a fully-boxed frame would be next to impossible. The open-channel frame has the edge in this regard.

It’s only slightly more of a pain to coat the inside of a frame. You can get long flexible applicators with spray nozzle at the end, to run inside the box frame. 4Runners are only one of many vehicles affected by rust, but most people never ever wash the underside of their vehicle during the winter months to rinse it all off.
