Braking Slips

2008 Highlander Hybrid 238,000+ miles. My brakes have been inspected and are fine. Periodically when I brake, it feels exactly like driving on dry pavement, then hitting a small patch of ice, then back to dry pavement. Like it catches, slips, and catches again. One mechanic told me it sounds like the hub bearing, but when I searched my symptoms with that, nothing showed up. I DO need a driver side front axle (had the passenger side replaced a couple years ago) but that couldn't be causing it, could it? I see they sell kits with hub bearings and axles together and was wondering if I should just have them both replaced at the same time? I know hardly anything about cars so I'm thankful for you great people here to help me! Appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks!

Our 2017 Prius does the exact same thing. When we hit a little bump while braking, it feels like the brakes release for a second (or less) like hitting an ice patch. (Tires don't skid, just the brakes let go for a split second.) I don't know if it always did this. I did some research awhile ago, and if I recall, it wasn't a problem. Seems a little ridiculous though. Coincidence that we both have Hybrids? Not sure if it's related.

It does sound dangerous, but has yet to be a problem. I found my research from awhile ago on PriusChat:
"yes, standard prius fare. it occurs because the regen is slowing and the friction is increasing, causing an abrupt lurch due to traction control. get used to pressing harder on the brake when you feel it, and leave plenty of room between you and the car in front of you."
Today, finding similar posts on ToyotaNation:
TN Camry 8th Gen Hybrid
If anyone finds a real/fixable problem, I hope to learn from this thread.

Next time I drive I will try to be aware of anything related to that phenomenon, since I don’t recall anything specifically. Wondering what a dealer would say. After using the link you provided, this is a big problem….even on some…..but not all new vehicles, good luck.

a slipping tone ring due to cracking/rust can cause the ABS to engage when coming to a stop, even at slow speeds.
it could work fine and only slip in certain situations/conditions.
huh, unless it was glaring damage or sitting cockeyed, i'm not sure that's something i'd have ever considered if i was digging into an ABS issue. storing that nugget of info, thanks

OP, are you familiar with what ABS activating sounds/feels like? its quite distinctive. from what i recall, an abs light doesnt come on when it is active. if you have an ABS light on all the time, obviously that is a problem

if it sounds/feels like ABS activating, and the issue being intermittent, i'd be more inclined to consider a faulty abs wheel sensor and/or corresponding wiring/connector. electrical gremlins love being unpredictable.

same here. lol
i had the ABS activate while coming to a stop last year. was really weird.
turns out, there was another member on here that had a similar issue. After allot of digging, it turned out to be the tone ring.
it had a crack and wasnt as tight as it should have been. under certain situations (i suppose) it would move/slip and cause the ABS to activate.

Exactly. I've seen this more times than I can count.
