2009 Camry Hybrid 45,000 miles. MFD is all white.

Toyota dealer says "$5,000 to fix." Since I spent only $31,000 on the car, this is 16% of the initial price of the car. Had they offered me the car at $36,000 I would have gone somewhere else and purchased some other brand.

Toyota apparently had an issue with MFDs (EL002-05) in other car lines, but a call to Toyota Customer Experience line (800-331-4331) I got told that Toyota Camry is not experiencing any high level of MFD failures.

So I guess that I am left high and dry. I got a case number, but I am not expecting any miracles here.

Sorry for my ignorance, which one is MFD? One in instrument cluster or one in the dash center? Presuming it's NOT nav unit display. Last one can be quite easily replaced by disassembling the center dash and replacing the unit.
Is it maybe Multi Information Display? One in the speedometer area?
Try locating Instrument panel (cluster) fuse and pulling it out for an hour or so. DO NOT remove 12V battery cables to reset anything.

Camry MFD

Its in the center of the dashboard. Controls NAV, radio including satellite radio, CDs, climate, hybrid display, mpg calculator, an so on.

I tried pulling radio fuse overnight. No difference.

Getting the unit off the center of the dash is easy, but there are 5-7 cables attached with some very small and difficult to reach cable connections.

I found a refurb online for about $400 but Toyota called me yesterday and told me that they were discussing options. They actually sell a refurb for $2558 but even that is nearly 10% of initial cost.

So I have to wonder just how many people have had aproblem with the MFD on camry hybrids?

I will post the resolution of this case when it is resolved (today is Saturday).

None. You are the 2nd one to mention here. I have same nav unit. I also am not sure why you have so much fear replacing it. I had mine out in about 10 minutes, was trying to connect a camera to it. Took same to plug everything back in.
For the love of Hephaestus, patron of all mechanics, why would you pay dealership all the money? It's almost 20% of the car value.

Yah

Pull the center console, then the two "wings" and the container below the radio. Then 4 screws for MFD.

I found the connectors on the back of the unit to have very short lead lengths. Was pretty surprised how difficult it was to get them off then back on. Maybe my newly acquired tremor made it worse.

the $400 refurb doesn't have much of a warranty. You pulled a camry MFD or a highlander? I bet that the highlander has more room. My hands are also very large. And I dropped a screw which I cannot find.

You have pictures of disassembly?
