Camshaft timing, V-notching question

Yeah, well that's it. I have a question about lining up the cam with the V-notch on a 2.2l 4cyl 93 engine. Is it the V-notch to the back of the engine, say 10:30 if you're considering engine is slanted towards the back? Or the first V-notch towards the front at 2:00 (since engine is not straight up and down)?

I've seen the pics in the timing belt DIY thread, but it really doesnt seem clear to me. Did waterpump, and timing belt since I was there, but in a no-start situation, atm.
I've lined it up with the frontward notch, since it looks that way in the pic, but car wont start. Seems like it has gas and good fire, but for some reason now, with crank at 0 the distributor rotor is lined up with the #3 plug terminal, 1/4 turn away from #1. I didnt pull the distributor, so I'm also wondering if for some reason, the distributor follow cam shaft rotation, instead of crank.

Thanks

It is the "V" notch in the middle of the bearing cap.

best picture I have found for this is the #5 post in this thread

After you have set the gear timing and tensioner is loose(spring in place) and pushing against the belt, use a socket wrench on the crankshaft bolt and rotate the crank a 1/4 turn one way then a 1/4 turn back to line up the crank timing mark again.
This will tighten up the belt and show you if cam timing is off by a tooth.

The distributor runs off the camshaft
