Can the TPMS system be disabled?

Long story short, the idiot who sold me my wheels didn't install them so I'm gonna have to buy sensors and get them installed.

Thinking more about it, I don't have TPMS on my Z06 and I don't really think they're necessary.

So can the TPMS be disabled on my 2008 Camry base model?

Can the light bulb be removed?

It's annoying the shit out of me.

Yeah the light can be removed, you have to go through the whole dashboard and stuff though.
My TPMS light has been on for the last 2 years after I got my first set of aftermarket wheels.

some people put a sticker over it lol and others just ignore it.

after a while, you won't notice that it's lit like me

But I'm also curious of the same question..

I've heard of being able to go to the dealer and disabling the seatbelt light, I wonder if the same can be done for the TPMS.

I read about a guy with the same problem. What he did was to get a piece of 4" PVC pipe about a foot long, and 2 end caps from Home Depot.

He drilled and tapped the PVC pipe so a pipe fitting that would hold a shrader valve could screw into the pipe. Then he wrapped up the stock sensors in some bubble wrap, and stuck them in the PVC pipe, used some PVC cement to glue on the endcaps, and then pressurized the PVC pipe with the sensors in it to 35 PSI, and put the PVC pipe with the sensors in it, in the trunk of his car.

If the low tire pressure light ever came on, he just added some air to the pipe, and didn't have to worry about the TPMS from then on when he changed from winter to summer tires.

I have no first hand knowledge if this will work or not, but it sounds plausible, and I'd be curious to find out if it is fact, or just some urban legend.

I keep one summer tire with a TPMS sensor as a spare and my light never comes on. In fact one of my winter tires was low and the TPMS light on the dash came on. I bought sensors years ago before I knew they had to be calibrated. My sensors seem to work without being calibrated to the car.

Yes that light can be annoying along with any other service lights. haha, just cover it up with black electric tape on the outer part?

Just buy a used set of sensors off ebay.

And get them installed, and use this tool like I showed you before and program the sensors yourself like I do. Just make sure to get the sensors ID from your stock wheels with this tool first and write them down. Then program the new set of sensors in into the tool. You do all of this on your computer with the program. I use it to switch with my winter wheels and summer wheels. The tool is very useful and saves you money instead of going to the dealer everytime you switch wheels.

My Camry TPMS never went off even though I have after market wheels.
But my G37 TPMS was on since I bought it, with OEM wheels.
Dealer didn't want to turn off the light because of safety issues.
Now that I've got after market wheels on the G it's still on and bugs me more:(

Yeah the installation price is around 160 to take off from old rims to put in new ones.

Dismount all 4 tires, take out TPMS, reprogram, and then put in new rims, and mount them.

OR buy 4 new ones, put in new rims, but cost should still be the same.

Personally I can pretty much use my eyes to tell if they need more PSI or not lol
But I guess for the average person, they wait for the light to go on.

What I like about it is if I get a puncture while driving down the road. Around my University is a lot of construction so I pick up a nail every now and then.

If I am driving down the road and my TPMS light comes on I will pull into a Discount Tire and have them inspect my tires real quick. I like doing this rather than getting all the way home before I found out I have a nail in my tire. It saves me a trip from having to re-air my tire before setting out again to go to Discount Tire.

One time I picked up a nail on a trip to Nashville (About 1000 miles). Who knows how long I would have cruised down the road not knowing I had a nail and a slow leak if I didn't have a TPMS.

I got the "rebuild" kit from Discount Tire when I got my new wheels and tires and it was $45 or something around there. I could of swore I read somewhere in here that the TPMS brain has a plug in behind our radio and you just unplug it. Could be wrong though so don't take my word for it.

I never got why Discount Tires charges for the TPMS rebuild, if they just put new tires on, why won't the TPMS still be compatible or something?

old worn TPMS seal might start leaking, replacing it while tires are off saves you from potential problem.

My daughter-in-law's 2007 Rav 4 had 3 leaky TPMS sensors. I have extra rebuild kits. To make a long story short. We broke 3 sensors trying to remove them. After breaking the first one we used penetrating oil which did not help. I hate living in the rust belt.

Being in Orlando, I think he will be okay.

Quite frankly, I hate the system and think it's for those who don't give a shit about maintaining their car. If I were to put sensors back in, I'm not going to put old ones back in and have them fail just to get the work done again.

At this point, I think I'm gonna just take the dash apart and take the light bulb out.
