Can't Adjust Touch Controls Sensitivity

Just bought a 2014 limited with the Tech package. The manual says there are 3 settings to the sensitivity of the touch controls but my dealer says that he cannot find any way to change the setting in his test computer. Has anyone had this same problem, and I do consider it a problem when you reach up to touch the the map screen and just bearly brush the lower control switches. The panel beeps but you really don't know what activated. Very irritating. Whats wrong with the good old fashioned manual switches Toyota?

I agree with you about the "whats wrong with the good old fashioned manual switches". At least we can adjust the radio volume with the knob on the dash which I always do without taking my eyes off the road. To adjust the radio volume with the steering wheel volume adjuster, I must take my eyes off the road, and look at the steering wheel volume adjuster. Not safe.

The good thing is that the Avalon system is still better than the Ford (and Lincoln) MyFordTouch, where everything is on the touch screen. That was one of the reasons I did not buy a 2013/2014 MKZ.

Wow, you seriously have to look at the steering wheel to use the controls?

Go to another dealer.
They can adjust it.

Be careful. You might get what you ask for and with desensitiveized? you might have to look longer at screen and really touch them.

Manual switches are gone forever.

Soon, thoughts will control.........

Highly doubt it was an Ipad. Techstream will not run on OS and it doesn't have a USB port. They usually use a silver cased laptop. Suppose to have my cable and software today. Bought a junker laptop with XP at our local computer recyclers for $50 just to use to program my Toyotas. But this is encouraging. My dealer flat out stated that the sensitivity is NOT adjustable.

Well folks, I had to go to a on the ball dealership during my vacation trip to find the answer to the question, "How do you adjust the touch button sensitivity" on a 2014 Avalon Hybrid with the Nav system installed. As you recall, my home town dealer said he could not find the custumizing point in the Techstream program that deals with this adjustment. Well its not in the Techstream program after all. Its customer changeable using the console buttons themselves. Ok here is the procedure

1. Turn power switch on to ( ACC).
2. Press the radio "seek track" up and down buttons simultaneously for
10 seconds or more. All panel switches on the navigation/reciever will blink
Indicating you are in the change sensor mode.
3. Select a sensitivity level using the "Seek track" up or down switches.
4. The number of blinks for each sensitivity level is: 4 blinks for high (default)'
3 blinks for medium and 2 blinks for low sensitivity.
5. To save and exit, press the Setup button.

Note. The up switch will only increase sensitivity and the down switch will only decrease sensitivity. It does not loop back around.

I hope this helps you people out there with the installed Tech package and irratated with the over sensitivity of those buttons.

End of line ...........

A very useful and interesting post. Thank you for investigating and finding the answer.

In my case, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that the procedure works as described, although it took longer than 10 seconds before the switches began blinking and I could modify the settings. The bad news is that I can't tell any difference between the high and low settings. Even after adjusting down to 2, the slightest brush on a switch would activate it, as before. I'll be interested in what others find -- maybe it's me.

I didn't notice Bobodude's second post before posting mine, so I went back and double-checked -- I am now set for low sensitivity (two blinks), but I still don't really notice any significant change in the sensitivity. I have a 2013 Limited so maybe that's why my result is different.

Set mine to "2 blinks". The directions worked perfectly! Mine was set at "4 blinks" originally.

I have the wood-grain on my dash, should not make any difference......I played with selecting buttons for a couple minutes and really don't see a difference.

I'm sure their is a difference, just hard for me to notice.

I will let you know in the weeks to come if anything changes.

Thanks for the "trick"!

I need to make one more point and then I will shut up. The blinking of the switches, up/down, media, radio, setup, info etc are pretty dim. You need to do this at night or in a dark garage. Once you get into the sensor sensitivity mode, the panel sws will continually blink the setting that the panel is set to every 3 seconds. Once you hit the setup button to exit and save the setting it will quit blinking. Thanks everybody for you kind comments.

Thank you Bobodude!!!

Your procedure worked on my 2013 TAH Limited w/o Tech. I set the sensitivity to 2. Although the buttons may still be a bit sensitive, it is good the procedure is no longer a mystery. Keep up the good work. We need more problem solvers and fewer complainers, on this forum and in the world in general.

Setting IntelliTouch Button Sensitivity

Ok, the Toyota Dealer gave me this information for my 2014 XLE Touring Avalon and it worked!

Vehicle ignition to ACC
Press the "PWR\VOL" on the radio for off
Press the AUDIO and SETUP switches simultaneously for 10 seconds
until "Capacitive Senor Setting" is displayed on the screen.
Set the sensitivity level by using the SEEK TRACK up or down buttons,
one beep is low sensitivity
two beeps is middle sensitivity
three beeps is high sensitivity
Touch any button other than SEEK TRACK UP or DOWN to exit.
Hope this helps others

Setting IntelliTouch Button Sensitivity

I tried the solution posted by Joe C and it worked on my 2014 Avalon Limited with Display audio/Navigation (purchased in Canada). I haven't had a chance to check it on the road yet but the sensitivity seems to be lower. I can't understand why a problem like this wouldn't have been identified sooner by the manufacturer, perhaps during road tests etc. I appreciate the help...Thanks...Bob

Bob,
It's amazing that Toyota made it so hard to find this information, and that the buttons are so sensitive. I had Toyota Consumer Service on the phone for hours, and their answer was, " Let us try to find a dealer close to you that knows how to change the sensitivity." I finally asked my dealer to practice on there show room car, and let me know when they figured it out.

The touch-sensitivity is just one of the many annoyances and user-UN-friendliness of my 2013 Avalon Ltd with Nav pkg. I too got the same song from the dealer that they did not have a procedure for adjusting the sensitivity even though the owners manual states that it can be adjusted (by the dealer). It took them a few tries to reach out to Toyota Tech Support and finally got the procedure. I must have mis-heard the service manager - I thought he told me the procedure involved the SEAT buttons, which I thought was absurd. I guess he said SEEK. Anyway, they claimed they adjusted it down, but like several of you, I don't really notice a difference.
And speaking of touch-sensitive controls, does anyone else have the problem with the fan control that I have? I can affect the fan speed by touching the panel area ABOVE the designated -...+ strip. The Toyota gurus say "it works as designed".
