Can't get a new fan belt to stop squealing

I installed a new Goodyear alternator belt on our 07 Yaris couple months back and it started squealing after the first day and only during a cold start. My past experience has taught me that it's normally due to a loose belt (when belt is new) so I tightened it just a bit. After 3 days it started squealing again. I've increased the tension on the belt three times now and the squealing has not gone away. It's only on cold starts and only for about 1 minute. If memory serves me right there is no tensioner for the alternator belt. It would appear that it doesn't matter how tight the belt is, it still squeals on cold starts.

Other than replacing the new belt with another new belt, are there any suggestions as I feel Goodyear is a good quality belt?

Theoretically speaking, any "decent" brand belt should work fine, and I would have had every reasonable expectation that it would have worked fine for your Yaris. That being said, the belt shouldn't be overly tight--but you shouldn't have to re-tighten/stretch/stress it every time it squeals--that ain't right.

I would take the belt off and inspect all the pulleys the belt routes around--look for any sharp surfaces...also from the front of the car, look at the pulleys and see if they are lined up and even--also make sure they aren't wobbling (when car running).

Is it possible the noise is coming from a pulley and not the belt? When you start the car, open the hood, and try to locate the sound of the noise? Is it coming from a pulley? You could try spraying a little lubricant to see if that stops it, if it does, it could be that pulley.

Getting back to Goodyear, this is just me, but I tend not to buy them--but that's because I'm not a fan of their tires. I'm sure their belts should be as good as the other brands---but maybe you got one from a bad batch? You could try another belt and just see how it goes. I've always liked Bando or Dayco--so if everything looks ok pulley wise, throw another make belt on there and see what happens.

Found this on forum diff car, but same principles apply:

From hardtopte72: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/1...-1992-1996-1997-2001/1124842-how-judge-appropriate-serpentine-belt-tension.html

"Here is how I check belt tension on a serpentine belt:

Go to the long side of the belt and grab the belt with your hand.

1. If you can twist the belt around past the halfway point (meaning the ribs are actually facing upwards) it is too loose.

2.If you can't twist the belt at all it is too tight.

3. If you can twist the belt around the the halfway point (ribs pointed outwards and not past there) the belt is perfect."

I gotta remember that, I always went by general "feel"...but this might be a good method.
