When the windshield wipers are not being used, they retract to below
the hood. To enable the windshield wipers to be lifted when parking in
cold conditions or when replacing a windshield wiper insert, change
the rest position of the windshield wipers to the service position using
the wiper lever.
■ Raising the wipers to the service position
Within approximately 45 seconds of turning the engine
switch off, move the wiper lever
to the * 1 or * 2
position and hold it for approximately 2 seconds or more.
The wipers will move to the service position.

Yes...for some reason...it was by design...

 

The wipers park below the hood for a cleaner look. The hidden wiper was first used by Cadillac in the 1960's and every Lexus car since the beginning so it's nothing new.

 

Also, never try to activate the wiper while pulled forward in the service position. The drivers side wiper will contact the hood and scratch it.

 

Just activate the wipers and turn the car off before the wipers return to their normal "parked" pisition.

Nothing like having the opposing teams playbook.

 

I can not lift them all the way up on my lexus, just enough to clean under them but not where I can lift them up where they stay up, the arm hits my hood.

 

Had the same issue on my 21, had to lift the wiper to clear off some ice buildup and didn't notice that it was scratching the hood on the side until it was to late as the snow was covering it.

Thankfully it's something some touch up paint can solve but still a disapointing design.

 

So if you leave the wipers in the service position and pick them up off the windshield due to a coming snow storm, when you start the car will they be on and scratch the hood or stay in the service position until you activate the wipers?

I tried it just now (with my beautiful wife standing by to bat the wiper down in case this was going south 😅) - just leaving them up & off the windshield and then starting the car, doesn't do anything, in my 2023 TCH XSE; (they stay still) as long as you have the wiper lever in the parked position. Which it should be, as that would be the default position it would come to rest after putting the wipers up in Service position. I guess in some bad luck scenario, the wiper lever could get accidentally bumped as one is leaving vehicle; that would be unfortunate for the next start..

The manuals says
* "Do not operate the wiper lever when the windshield wipers are lifted. Otherwise, the windshield wipers may contact the hood, possibly resulting in damage to the windshield and/or hood.
Thus, it will be very important to lower then back to windshield before activating the wiper lever.
