Yesterday my CEL came on, got the code read by my mechanic gave the code P0770, shift solenoid E malfunction. It has something to do with the torque converter not locking up appropriately or at all. As far as I can tell, the transmission shifts perfectly and i have not noticed any changes since the CEL came on. As a matter of fact, I am pretty sure the torque converter is locking up, I was driving on the highway at about 60mph and let it coast till about 50mph. At that time the RPMs rose abruptly, about 500RPM, which I take to mean that the torque converter unlocked. Let me know what u guys think, I went to two transmission shops. I talked with the guys and both seemed VERY SHADY. I wanna know if theres anyone who can shed some light on this. I saw there are threads with this same code, but none have been resolved. ANY HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED, AS NEW TRANNYS ARE EXPENSIVE!

The code means lockup is not occurring when driving in normal range (50 MPH) or remains on outside of range. The ECM controls O/D shifting based on sensor signals such as speed, coolant temp, throttle position and some I don’t know. A sensor or the solenoid could be not working properly. I think it is also called solenoid SL by Toyota. This solenoid is accessible by dropping the trans fluid pan.

If you have diagnostic skills you download the trans service info for the Camry V6 (I think it is the same trans and engine) at the link below. You want the Gen_4 Camry A541E trans. The section has a good troubleshooting section that uses a combo of the check engine and O/D lights to help diagnosis the problem.

the torque converter only locks up when ya cruising, and thats only when youve been at a stady speed for a while, so not very often usually....USUALLY... i can tell when mine locks becuase i can HEAR it via my exhaust :)

dont go to a mechanic, go to a electrician.

just reset the code and see if it comes back

I had the code- along with 9 others when I first installed my blower (plenty of problems on the gen3 it seems sometimes) and it never came back
