Central Locking / Ignition Issue

Hi,

We have a 1997 Conquest (Australian model). Occasionally when locking the doors with the remote, it beeps twice and does not lock. You then have to close the doors with the key. Upon locking it beeps again. When unlocking the car it can't be done with the remote, it must be done with the key.

Following this issue, it causes another problem - you can turn the key in the ignition, not even to accessory. The steering wheel is not locked. You have to play with the key numerous times going back and forth until it finally opens up.

As mentioned it happens only occasionally probably once a fortnight. As the old lady drives the car I would like to get it fixed but have not idea where to start.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

gt88 I have the same problem with my 96 Corolla Conquest. I got a new ignition barrel and key, my belief was that it was worn out. My key wouldn't turn only once in a while and after some wiggling it worked but eventually it wouldn't turn at all. I also found having the steering lock engaged made the problem worse, so maybe always try parking with the wheels straight, it helped me for a while. I am also having the same problem with my keyless entry. I can't lock the doors at all, and when I try the car beeps like it does if you try and lock it and a door is still open/ajar, however none are. I tried my spare remote and it didn't work either. However, once in the car I can still turn the immobiliser off by clicking the button on the remote, because of this I am leaning towards it being something to do with the doors or as someone suggested earlier the door lock motors.. The car is not my favourite at the moment, its started to have a few niggling little problems, but then why wouldn't it I guess :)
