The proper way would have been to retrieve the codes and find out what is causing the CEL.
However, if you are stuck somewhere without any way to retrieve the code you can disconnect the battery, cross your fingers and hope that the ECU will reset and allow you to at least drive home.
I keep my OBDII code reader in my vehicle. I rarely get a check engine light but I am so anal with my vehicles that when I do I want to know right now what the deal is, not wait till I get home. I do work an hour from home as well. If I read a code like Evap or Cat Efficiency I can relax and drive home knowing it is nothing to worry about. But would also be nice to have if you have an issue like his above away from the house and the engine running weird and a code pop up. To at the very least give you a clue of where to start looking to correct the issue.
